On October 9, 2024, TASS Russian News Agency, a Russian state-run news agency, reported that Discord had been restricted from accessing the platform for violating Russian law.

Russia's Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technologies and Mass Media (Roskomnadzor) confirmed the blocking of Discord in a statement to local media.

'Access to the Discord messenger has been restricted due to violations of Russian legislation necessary to prevent the use of the messenger for terrorist and extremist purposes, the recruitment of citizens, the sale of drugs and the posting of illegal information,' Roskomnadzor's press service told TASS.

Russia has in recent years pressured foreign platforms to remove content it deems illegal under its laws, regularly issuing relatively small fines to companies that don't comply.

According to multiple media reports, including Reuters, Roskomnadzor has ordered Discord to remove 947 pieces of illegal content, including 'LGBT propaganda,' since February 2021, and on September 30, 2024, a Russian court fined Discord 3.5 million rubles (about 5.4 million yen).

Also, although it is unclear whether this is related to the block in Russia, the IT news site BleepingComputer reported on October 9 that Discord was also blocked in Turkey at the same time as it was blocked in Russia.

The decision to block Discord comes after a court order was issued in Turkey regarding child abuse and obscene content that was allegedly being hosted on Discord.

Turkey's Minister of Justice Yilmaz Tunci announced on Twitter that the Ankara 1st Magistrates' Criminal Court had decided to remove all publications from the social media platform Discord and block access to the specified URL addresses from Turkey, citing sufficient suspicion of the crime of 'child sexual abuse and obscenity' as provided for in Article 8, paragraph 1 of Law No. 5651 on the Regulation of Internet Publications and Combating Crimes Committed Through These Publications.
