Russia blocks Signal for 'violating' anti-terrorism laws
According to Russian news agency Interfax, on Friday, August 9, 2024, Roskomnadzor restricted access to Signal from within Russia, citing violations of legal requirements to prevent terrorism and extremism.
Signal is a messenger app that has been developed with a focus on confidentiality and security, but its high level of confidentiality has come under scrutiny.
In Russia, a ban on foreign messaging apps will be put in place for government and state agencies in March 2023, but this ban applies to Discord, Microsoft Teams, Telegram, Threema, Viber, WhatsApp, and WeChat, but not Signal.

In response to this move, Signal has introduced the use of censorship-circumvention features that would allow it to be used in countries where it is blocked.
