Thunderbird reports income and expenditures for 2023, total donations exceed 1.26 billion yen, with Japan tied for 4th place at around 50 million yen



Thunderbird , a free email software, has released its annual report for 2023 to 2024. According to this, Thunderbird received $8.6 million (about 1.26 billion yen) in donations in 2023.

The total amount of donations received by Thunderbird in 2023 is $8.6 million, up 34.5% from the previous year. More than 300,000 individuals have donated to Thunderbird, and the total number of donations has exceeded 515,000. In addition, it appears that 26% of donations were monthly regular donations.

What's notable about donations to Thunderbird is that the majority of donations were small: the average donation was $16.90, and the median was $11.12.

Some have suggested that Thunderbird has 'super donors' who donate large amounts of money, but Thunderbird says, 'No, we just have a super community.' 61% of donations were less than $20, and 95% of transactions were less than $35. Thunderbird emphasizes that there were only 56 donations over $1,000 in a year, which is only 0.0007% of all donations.

Below is a graph showing which countries donated to Thunderbird. The graph on the left shows which countries donated the most, in order of most to Thunderbird: Germany (29%), the United States (20%), France (6%), the United Kingdom (4%), Japan (4%), and others (37%). Although detailed figures have not been disclosed, donations from Japan amounted to about 4% ($344,000, or about 50 million yen in Japanese yen) of the total donations ($8.6 million). The graph on the right shows the percentage of donations, in order of most to none: Germany (22%), the United States (15%), France (6%), the United Kingdom (5%), Japan (4%), and others (48%).



According to Thunderbird, donations have been received from more than 200 countries, but half of all donations come from five countries: Germany, the United States, France, the United Kingdom, and Japan, accounting for 63% of the total donations.

Below is a graph showing how Thunderbird uses these donations. The largest expense is employee salaries (68.2%), followed by infrastructure and operational costs to build Thunderbird (13.9%). Other expenses include donation processing fees (7.6%), G&A (6.6%), marketing & community (2.0%), and travel expenses (1.7%).
