I tried shooting various movies with DJI's action camera 'Osmo Action 5 Pro', which is equipped with a new sensor and has improved battery life for professionals

DJI, a manufacturer of action cameras and drones, released the action camera ' Osmo Action 5 Pro ' on Thursday, September 19, 2024. It combines the high image quality of a professional camera with the robust durability of an action camera, and is equipped with a 13.5-stop dynamic range, a long battery life of 4 hours, and subject centering/tracking functions. I was able to borrow the Osmo Action 5 Pro from DJI, so I actually shot various movies.

The details of the video settings and formats that can be shot with the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro are as shown in the table below. The CMOS image sensor is the same 1/1.3 inch size as the previous model Osmo Action 4, but the sensor design is new and has been revamped, with a dynamic range of up to 13.5 stops. In addition, the Osmo Action 5 Pro can now shoot 4K (4:3) 120fps videos, that is, 3840 x 2880 pixels with a frame rate of 120fps. This makes it possible to shoot with a wider angle of view at 4:3 120fps aspect ratio and then crop to 16:9 (3840 x 2160 pixels).

Here's a 4K movie actually shot with the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro. The color setting is normal 8bit and the camera shake setting is RockSteady.

In video mode, you can select the angle of view from standard (distortion correction), wide angle, or ultra-wide angle, and the image stabilization mode from RockSteady, RockSteady+, HorizonBalancing, and HorizonSteady. However, HorizonBalancing and HorizonSteady, which are combined with the horizontal stability function, can only be applied up to 60 fps in 2.7K (16:9), and only HorizonBalancing can be applied up to 60 fps in 4K (16:9). Neither can be applied in 2.7K (4:3) or 4K (4:3).

The image below shows the wide-angle shot at 4K (16:9) and 60 fps. The front and back displays are OLED (organic light-emitting diode) displays, which are bright and clear while consuming little power. The angle of view is narrower.

I applied the image stabilization function RockSteady to a wide-angle shot. You can see that the image has been cropped and is a little narrower.

This is what it looks like at ultra-wide angle. The field of view of the Osmo Action 5 Pro is up to 155 degrees.

I tried applying RockSteady+ to the ultra-wide-angle image as a blur correction. RockSteady+ has a stronger correction than RockSteady, so the crop rate of the image is also higher.

I tried shooting the same subject at standard setting. Standard setting includes distortion correction, and as you can see from the board in the background of the stuffed animal, the linear bulges along the circumference are eliminated. However, the angle of view is narrower.

In the standard (distortion correction) setting, you can apply Horizon Balancing to the image stabilization. Horizon Balancing is also an electronic image stabilization, so the screen will be cropped.

In addition, the resolution of still images that can be taken with the Osmo Action 5 Pro has increased from about 10MP in the previous model to about 40MP. The following photos were actually taken. If you click on the thumbnail, the actual size (8000 x 4512 pixels, about 5MB) of the photo will be displayed, so please be careful if you have limited communication bandwidth.

◆Supports 10-bit, D-Log M and 10-bit HLG modes
In color mode, you can now switch between four types: Normal 8bit, Normal 10bit,

HLG 10bit, and D-Log M 10bit. Normal 10bit and D-Log M 10bit were also available on the Osmo Action 4, but the addition of HLG means there are now more color setting options.

Below are pictures of the same scene shot with HLG 10bit, normal 10bit, and D-Log M 10bit. HLG seemed to have a slightly less vivid color than normal 10bit, and looked closer to natural colors.

◆Subject tracking function
The Osmo Action 5 Pro now comes with a new subject tracking feature that intelligently detects the subject's position and dynamically adjusts the composition.

I used the object tracking function to take a picture of the iCEO stuffed toy. When you look at the screen of the Osmo Action 5 Pro, a gray frame is displayed on the screen and the recognized object is surrounded by a yellow frame. The gray frame is the area to crop the screen.

Below is a shot of a moving person using Osmo Action 5 Pro's subject tracking. The wipe screen in the lower right shows the actual scene, and the rest is footage that was actually captured with Osmo Action 5 Pro. You can clearly see that the gray frame moves so that the person that is properly recognized is at the center of the screen, and the screen is cropped accordingly.

What about night photography?
The Osmo Action 5 Pro is equipped with a Super Night mode for night photography. Below are the results of shooting in normal video mode and Super Night mode in a park late at night. There are almost no street lights, so in normal video mode it is pitch black and you can't see what is being shown, but in Super Night mode you can shoot at a maximum ISO of 51200, so you can capture the shape of the trees in the background and the faint light that has reached the ground, making it look much brighter.

Below is a video of me walking around a dark city at night in Super Night mode. However, it seems that low-light shooting and image stabilization don't work that well together, and subtle camera shake caused strange vibrations on the screen.

◆Try shooting with Osmo Action 5 Pro
The Osmo Action 5 Pro has evolved from all the Osmo Action 4 models, and I felt that the range of images that can be captured has expanded. In particular, the color settings have been improved, and the battery life is long, with a nominal maximum of 4 hours, so it's nice that you don't have to worry about the remaining battery time as much as with the previous model. In addition, there is 47GB of built-in storage, so I felt that it was a great advantage that you can still shoot even if you forget your microSD card.

Although we were not able to test it this time, the performance of the built-in microphone has been improved from the previous model, and the wireless microphone can be used with 2 channels, so audio recording has also been improved. The Osmo Action 5 Pro is not only suitable for recording activities such as sports, but also for Vlog shooting compared to the previous model.

The previous model already had sufficient performance as a simple recording device for personal use, but the Osmo Action 5 Pro now also takes into account what happens after the shooting has been completed, making it a device that can withstand professional use, as the 'Pro' name suggests.

The Osmo Action 5 Pro comes in two versions: the Standard Combo, which includes the main unit, Osmo Extreme Battery Plus, protective frame, quick-release adapter mount, adhesive curved base, locking screw, Type-C - Type-C PD standard compatible cable, rubber lens protector, glass lens cover, and anti-slip pad. The Adventure Combo also comes with a multi-function battery case, a quick-release adapter mount (mini), and a 1.5 m extension rod.

The Osmo Action 5 Pro is also available on Amazon, with the standard combo costing 55,000 yen including tax.
