DJI's next-generation action camera 'Osmo Action 5 Pro' with features comparable to professional cameras: photo review

DJI, a manufacturer of action cameras and drones, announced the action camera ' Osmo Action 5 Pro ' on Thursday, September 19, 2024. As the name suggests, it combines the high image quality of a professional camera with the rugged durability of an action camera, and is equipped with a 13.5-stop dynamic range, a long battery life of 4 hours, and subject centering/tracking functions. I was able to borrow the Osmo Action 5 Pro from DJI, so I first checked out its appearance.

The Osmo Action 5 Pro Adventure Combo package looks like this.

Inside is an Osmo 1.5m extension rod and one inner box labeled 'ACCESSORIES' and 'OSMO ACTINO 5 PRO.'

The inner box of the 'OSMO ACTINO 5 PRO' contains the Osmo Action 5 Pro body, a protective frame, locking screws, an adhesive curved base with double-sided tape, a quick-release adapter mount, and an anti-slip pad.

The Osmo Action 5 Pro's body size is 70.5mm wide x 44.2mm long x 32.8mm deep. The lens with FOV155° and aperture value f/2.8 is already equipped with a rubber lens protector and a glass lens cover, and there is a 1.46-inch, 342 x 342 pixel, 331 ppi touch panel on the left side of the lens. The front appearance is not significantly different from the previous model,

Osmo Action 4 , but the camera protection sheet and glass lens cover of Osumo Action 4 cannot be used.

The microphone is hidden in the grooves above and below the product logo under the lens. This design makes it less susceptible to wind from the front when recording audio.

On the back is a 2.5-inch, 400 x 712 pixel, 326 ppi touch panel.

On the top is the recording start/stop button.

On the right side is the power button and cover.

There was a USB-C port on the inside of the cover.

On the left side is a cover with the DJI logo engraved on it.

Opening the cover on the left side reveals the battery pack slot and the microSD card slot. The maximum capacity of the microSD card is 1TB.

There is a quick release adapter mount on the bottom, and various accessories can be easily attached and fixed with magnets and hooks. The small hole on the left is a pressure gauge that measures air and water pressure.

The ACCESSORIES box contained various instructions and stickers, a Type-C to Type-C PD standard compatible cable, a quick release adapter mount (mini), and a multi-function battery case.

The multi-function battery case looks like this.

When I opened the lid, I found three Extreme Batteries Plus inserted inside. The indicator on the front notifies you of the charging status with different colors and lights up when you open the lid.

The Extreme Battery Plus looks like this. The battery has been improved from the previous model, Osmo Action 4, and the previous model's multi-function battery case cannot fully charge the Osmo Action 5 Pro's Extreme Battery Plus.

There is nothing on the right side of the multi-function battery case.

On the left side there is a USB-C port for charging.

There is nothing on the back except for the hinged lid.

DJI logo on the top.

The bottom has the CE mark and KC mark.

I inserted an Osmo Extreme Battery Plus into the Osmo Action 5 Pro and weighed it, and it was 145g.

The protective frame and quick release adapter mount are attached to the Osmo Action 5 Pro body and fixed to the 1.5m extension rod. All accessories except the camera protective sheet, lens cover, battery, and multi-function battery case are compatible with Osmo Action 4 and Osmo Action 5 Pro.

The quick-release adapter mount can also be attached to the left side of the protective frame, allowing for vertical shooting.

If you extend the 1.5m extension rod like this, you can take selfies from high up.

Next, I'll try out what kind of movies I can actually shoot with the Osmo Action 5 Pro, so stay tuned.

The Osmo Action 5 Pro comes in two versions: the Standard Combo, which includes the main unit, Osmo Extreme Battery Plus, protective frame, quick-release adapter mount, adhesive curved base, set screw, Type-C - Type-C PD standard compatible cable, rubber lens protector, glass lens cover, and anti-slip pad, and the Adventure Combo , which includes a multi-function battery case, quick-release adapter mount (mini), and 1.5 m extension rod. The suggested retail price is 55,000 yen for the Standard Combo and 69,300 yen for the Adventure Combo.
