The small drone 'DJI Neo' that can take off and land from the palm of your hand can shoot 'footage that follows a subject' or 'footage that circles around a subject' with the push of a button

Flying the DJI Neo

The

DJI Neo , which was released on Thursday, September 5, 2024, is a lightweight aircraft weighing only 137g including the battery, but is equipped with a high-performance camera that can record at 4K and 30fps. In addition, the DJI Neo is equipped with a function that allows you to land it just by holding your palm over it and a function that automatically tracks the subject, so I tried out various convenient functions.

The DJI Neo we rented from DJI this time has completed the unmanned aerial vehicle registration procedure , and the actual flight was conducted outside the unmanned aerial vehicle no-fly zone .

Take-off and landing from the palm of your hand
DJI Neo can take off not only from the ground, but also from the palm of your hand, making it safe to take off even when the ground is uneven and flat.

Additionally, if you place your hand directly underneath the drone, it will automatically land and the propellers will stop spinning.

You can see the DJI Neo take off and land from the palm of your hand in the video below.

◆ Quick shots using AI tracking
Drones are easier to operate than radio-controlled helicopters, but it takes some practice to combine turns and ascents to capture impressive aerial footage. On the other hand, the DJI Neo is equipped with an autopilot function called 'QuickShot,' which makes it easy to capture impressive aerial footage.

To use QuickShots, connect your drone to the DJI Fly app and tap the 'Follow' button on the screen.
Selecting a shooting mode

You can then choose from seven shooting modes: 'Manual Control,' 'Follow,' 'Dronie,' 'Circle,' 'Rocket,' 'Spotlight,' and 'DirectionTrack.'
Various shooting modes

Once you've selected a shooting mode, tap 'START' on the screen and DJI Neo will automatically fly and shoot an impressive video.

I tried to see what kind of movies I could shoot using the QuickShot modes 'Follow', 'Dronie', 'Circle', 'Rocket', 'Spotlight', and 'DirectionTrack'. The following footage was shot with the person in the center specified as the subject, and all other settings were taken with the default settings.

・Follow
Follow keeps the subject in the center of the screen and the drone follows the subject's movements while shooting. According to DJI, Follow is useful for capturing moving actions such as running or cycling.

Here's what it looks like from the outside. It can track the subject without any problems even if it moves violently.

Dronie
Dronie is a mode that keeps the subject in the center of the screen and shoots while ascending diagonally upwards. You can enjoy watching the scenery expand as the subject gets smaller and smaller. The distance from the subject can be set to 2m, 4m, 6m, or 10m, and the default was set to 4m.

·circle
Circle is a mode in which the drone flies in a circle around the subject. If you try to control it manually, you need to perform complex operations such as 'flying the drone in a circle horizontally while rotating the drone horizontally to keep the subject captured by the camera,' but with QuickShot you can shoot on autopilot. Like Droney, Circle can also be set to a distance from the subject, and you can choose from 2m, 4m, 6m, 10m, and 20m.

·rocket
Rocket is a mode in which the drone ascends while taking pictures of the subject. Unlike Dronie, it can ascend vertically up to 10m depending on the settings.

Spotlight
Spotlight is a mode that hovers at the takeoff position and follows the subject while shooting. By using Spotlight, you can easily shoot third-person perspective footage even by yourself.

・DirectionTrack
DirectionTrack is a mode that tracks the subject's movement more actively than Follow mode.

It will follow closely even when you make vigorous movements such as jogging or sudden changes of direction.

- One-button automatic flight without connecting to a transmitter or smartphone
DJI Neo can perform autopilot by simply pressing a button on the front of the unit, without the need to control it with a remote controller or smartphone.

Below is a video of the drone executing the 'Dronie' by pressing the button on the front of the drone. Note that if you are flying

a specific flight , you will need to connect to a transmitter or smartphone even if you are operating the buttons on the front of the drone.

・Shoot aerial footage with audio
DJI Fly is equipped with a microphone function that allows you to include your voice in the aerial footage by speaking into your smartphone.

- Easily affected by wind
The DJI Neo is lightweight at 137g, making it easy to carry, but its light weight means it can be easily blown around by the wind. Here's how much the DJI Neo sways in winds of up to 6m/s:

-Battery life is short
The 'DJI Neo Fly More Combo' I rented this time came with a total of three batteries, but after about 20 minutes of flight with each battery, the 'low battery' message was displayed, and the battery needed to be replaced and charged. In addition, after about an hour and 15 minutes of shooting outdoors at 35°C while repeatedly turning the power on and off, a high temperature warning was displayed and shooting was no longer possible for a certain period of time.
High Temperature Warning

In addition, DJI Neo can be purchased at official online shops , etc., and the price at Amazon.com at the time of writing of the 'DJI Neo Fly More Combo' which comes with a transmitter etc. is 57,200 yen including tax.
