According to Zuckerberg, in 2021, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, senior US government officials, including the White House, had been pressuring the team for months to censor certain COVID-19 content, including humor and satire. It has also been reported that when Meta expressed its intention to 'not agree to censorship,' the government expressed dissatisfaction.

In fact, Meta's SNS, Threads, restricted searches for words such as 'vaccines' and 'covid.' These search blocking measures were lifted in October 2023.

'We regret that Meta caved in to government pressure and censored content. We also believe that government pressure is wrong and regret not speaking up about this pressure,' Zuckerberg said. 'We feel strongly that we should not cave in to government pressure, either positive or negative, to change our content standards, and if this happens again, we plan to push back against government demands.'

However, a White House spokesperson said, 'The Administration has taken responsible actions throughout this pandemic to protect public health and protect the safety of our citizens. Our position has always been clear and consistent: we believe technology companies and other private actors should make good choices about the information they present, always considering the impact their actions have on the American people.'

In addition, Zuckerberg said in the letter, 'We were pressured by the FBI to remove content related to topics that appeared to be Russian disinformation during the 2020 US presidential election, and we removed some of the content.' Subsequent investigations have revealed that this topic was not Russian disinformation. 'In retrospect, we should not have removed the content,' Zuckerberg said.

'This is a major victory for free speech,' Chairman Jordan said in response to the letter.
