Cruise's self-driving cars have been experiencing issues with sudden braking while driving, resulting in 10 collisions to date. However, Cruise has implemented a software update for its self-driving cars, reporting that it has 'significantly reduced the risk of accidents caused by unexpected sudden braking.' On August 22, 2024, Cruise agreed to a recall of approximately 1,200 self-driving cars by NHTSA in order to 'improve trust and transparency regarding self-driving car technology.' As a result, the NHTSA's investigation into Cruise, which had been ongoing since December 2022, has ended . The regulator has indicated that it may take additional measures as necessary.

'We are committed to building trust and increasing transparency around self-driving technology,' a Cruise spokesperson said.

On August 22, 2024, Cruise announced that it had entered into a multi-year strategic partnership with Uber, which would allow users to request a ride from the Uber app with the option to 'Request a Cruise Self-Driving Vehicle.'

The vehicles used will be self-driving cars based on the Chevrolet Bolt EV , and the service is scheduled to begin in 2025.

'At Cruise, we're on a mission to leverage driverless technology to create safer road conditions and redefine urban life,' said Cruise CEO Mark Whitten. 'We're excited to partner with Uber to bring the benefits of safe, reliable autonomous driving to even more people and usher in a new era of urban mobility.'

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi added, 'As the world's largest mobility and delivery platform, we believe Uber can play a key role in safely and securely introducing self-driving technology to consumers and cities around the world. We're excited to partner with Cruise and look forward to launching the service next year.'

A Cruise spokesperson declined to provide details about Cruise's relaunch plan or the terms of the partnership with Uber, but did report that 'Cruise remains focused on relaunching our own driverless ride service and app.'
