Calbee's 'Chicken Salt Flavor Potato Chips' with a gentle Chinese soup flavor - a review and comparison with the regular 'Light Salt Flavor'

Calbee and students from

Showa Women's University have created ' Potato Chips Chicken and Salt Flavor ' for a limited time on Monday, August 12, 2024. Based on the concept of 'family gatherings,' the flavor is a chicken flavor reminiscent of the home cooking of parents as children, and the taste is a combination of Chinese chicken soup and salt flavor. I was curious about what it tasted like, so I actually tried it.

The package design looks like this.

A photo of Chinese-style chicken soup is printed on the bag along with the message, 'The delicious flavor of chicken leaves a lingering taste.'

The ingredients are potatoes, vegetable oil, dextrin, salt, glucose, starch, chicken extract powder, powdered soy sauce, pepper, chicken powder, ginger powder, etc. The content is 60g.

The calories are 332kcal per 60g bag.

On the back of the packaging, it was also advertised that the product was created in collaboration with Showa Women's University.

When I opened the bag and took out the contents, they looked almost the same as regular potato chips.

When I tried it, the saltiness was a little weak, but the umami was strong. I couldn't really taste the pepper or ginger, but after eating it, I felt a slight Chinese chicken soup flavor. That's about it. However, if you eat several pieces at once instead of eating them one by one, the flavor becomes much stronger and you can feel the taste of Chinese soup.

To get a better idea of the flavor, we tried comparing it with the regular light salt flavor. The salty chicken flavor had a good balance of saltiness and umami, while the light salt flavor was simply salty. The light salt flavor was saltier, and the salty stimulation led to a junky taste. The editorial staff who tried the flavors commented, 'The light salt flavor has an image of salt and potato flavors approaching independently, while the salty chicken flavor seems to have a better harmony of saltiness, umami, and potato flavors.' 'I don't usually eat potato chips, but the light salt flavor was easier to eat and I liked it.' 'What did the light salt flavor taste like?' I imagined the flavor in my head to be the light salt flavor, and the light salt flavor may be too salty compared to that.'

'Potato Chips Torisio Flavor' will be available at supermarkets and convenience stores nationwide from Monday, August 12, 2024. Also, at the time of writing this article, a set of 12 bags of 'Potato Chips Torisio Flavor' was available on Amazon.co.jp for 1,623 yen (132 yen per bag) including tax.
