It is pointed out that Kindle software is getting worse and worse with more bugs

Amazon released

the Kindle e -reader as its first hardware product in 2007, and has since continued to update its software and release new hardware. However, Good e-Reader, an e-book-related web media, points out that in 2024, bugs have become more noticeable on the Kindle, and the quality is steadily declining.

Amazon, a major online retailer and e-book store, has dominated the e-book industry by developing its own e-book reader, the Kindle. Michael Kozlowski, editor-in-chief of Good e-Reader, said, 'Amazon's Kindle was once one of the best e-book readers in the world and was rock-solidly stable.'

However, Kozlovsky said, 'In 2024, the situation was reversed. The Kindle experienced issues with various firmware updates,' and noted that the situation rapidly worsened with version 5.16.10.0.1 , released in July 2024.

According to Kozlovsky, the system for displaying the progress bar, which shows the progress of a book you are reading, has changed, making the font too small to read, and the progress bar takes a long time to display.

In addition, various problems have been reported, such as 'the battery drains quickly and runs out of charge in a few days,' 'the Kindle becomes unresponsive and requires restarting,' and 'custom fonts revert to the default Bookerly.'

In July 2024, it was reported that the Kindle book download function was no longer available. However, this problem has already been resolved.

'The Kindle firmware issues are just the tip of the iceberg,' Kozlovsky said. He also pointed out other issues, such as Kindle Unlimited titles disappearing from the library, sideloaded books being deleted automatically if Airplane Mode is left on for an extended period of time, books taking twice as long to open, and text-to-speech randomly starting and stopping.

Kozlovsky believes that the causes of these problems include the departure of Dave Limp, who was in charge of software and hardware at Amazon, and the firing of veteran Kindle developers due to large-scale restructuring.

'It's sad to see a product that once had great hardware and an intuitive software experience fall so quickly in the eyes of customers,' Kozlovsky said. 'Despite thousands of complaints on Reddit and Amazon's forums, Amazon has not publicly acknowledged the Kindle's problems. If Amazon can't fix the Kindle soon, my next e-reader purchase may be from a competitor.'

The Good e-Reader comment section is filled with various comments from users who have experienced similar issues. One user, whose Kindle Scribe 's battery life has worsened with the latest update, wrote, 'A year ago I wouldn't have been too worried that the next update would fix this, but the fact that other issues have persisted for so long baffles me. E-book covers disappearing, sideloaded content being deleted, having to return library books twice to remove them from the content list. All of these issues have been happening for over a year now with no solution in sight. My next e-reader probably won't be a Kindle.'

Another user said, 'My Kindle Oasis 2 has battery drain and occasional freezing issues. I've noticed the software experience has been inconsistent especially this year. Thanks for your article, I now understand why I was experiencing these software glitches. I hope Amazon gets serious about support and staffs it properly.'
