'SearchGPT is a prototype for a new search capability that combines the strengths of AI models with information from the internet to provide fast, timely answers from clear, relevant sources,' OpenAI explains.

You can see what kind of search function SearchGPT is by watching the following movie posted by OpenAI's official X account.

In SearchGPT, enter the sentence you want to search for, such as 'Can I see sea slugs in Half Moon Bay this weekend?'

SearchGPT will then provide you with answers on the types of sea slugs that can be found in Half Moon Bay and the best times to see them.

In response to this response, I typed in 'Is it hot?'

It then showed me the temperature and weather forecast for Half Moon Bay over the weekend.

Perplexity already offers an AI-based search engine, but it has been criticized by Forbes for 'using articles in its search results,' causing problems.

An OpenAI spokesperson told The Verge , an IT news site, 'OpenAI works with third-party partners to build search results using their direct content feeds.' In fact, when OpenAI announced SearchGPT, it revealed that it had partnered with several major publishers, including News Corp, the parent company of the American economic newspaper Wall Street Journal, and Atlantic, the publisher of the American monthly magazine The Atlantic. In this partnership, publishers can manage how their content appears on SearchGPT.

Nicholas Thompson, CEO of The Atlantic, an American monthly magazine, said, 'AI search will be one of the key ways people use the internet. In the early stages, it's critical that we build the technology in a way that values, respects and protects journalism and publishers. We look forward to partnering with OpenAI in this process and creating new ways for readers to discover The Atlantic's articles.'

SearchGPT is only available to 10,000 users at the time of writing, but it will be directly integrated into ChatGPT in the future. If you want to try out the prototype version first, you need to register for an OpenAI account and join the waitlist.
