Perplexity, which has been accused of plagiarism in its AI search results, launches a program to share advertising revenue with major media outlets

Perplexity, a search engine company that provides AI-powered content, has announced a new revenue sharing program for publishers. Perplexity has been accused of plagiarizing articles from major media outlets for its search engine, and to avoid legal trouble, it is proposing to share a portion of its advertising revenue with publishers and content creators.

Perplexity's AI-powered search engine allows users to enter text about something they want to search for into the search field, and the AI compiles the search results and creates reports and articles, or answers questions in a dialogue format.

However, Perplexity has come under scrutiny as it has discovered that the text of the articles in its search results is copied directly from paid articles published by major media outlets.

'Our ability to provide high-quality answers relies on trusted, accurate sources on the topics people care about most. Since day one, we've built user trust by including citations in every answer, ensuring publishers receive fair recognition,' Perplexity said in a statement, announcing that it has signed new program deals with publishers including TIME, Der Spiegel, Fortune, Entrepreneur, The Texas Tribune, and WordPress.com.

This program introduces advertising to the Related Questions feature, and when Perplexity earns revenue from interactions that refer to publisher content, the publisher receives a share of the revenue. According to a release from WordPress.com , by participating in the publisher program, WordPress.com blog posts will be included in the search index and displayed as answers on Perplexity. If Perplexity earns advertising revenue at this time, the revenue will be shared with the person who wrote the blog post.

'Every time Perplexity cites a publisher's article in an answer and earns advertising revenue, Perplexity will share a percentage of that revenue, calculated per article,' Perplexity's chief business officer, Dmitry Shevelenko, told CNBC. This means that if three articles from a publisher are used in one answer, the partner will receive three revenue shares.

Shevelenko confirmed that the revenue share for the new program will be in the 'double digits' but declined to provide specific figures. Within two hours of announcing the program, Shevelenko said, more than 10 publishers, including major daily newspapers and their parent companies, had contacted him with interest.

The new program will also include a partnership with ScalePost.ai, a platform that streamlines collaboration between publishers and AI companies and provides publishers with AI analytics, allowing partner publishers to see how Perplexity is citing their content.

Additionally, publishers will receive free access to Perplexity's API and developer support, which allows them to create their own AI-powered custom search engines for their websites. Additionally, Perplexity's Enterprise Pro plan, which includes privacy and security features, will be provided to publishers free of charge for one year.

'We built this publisher program to ensure a scalable and sustainable way to align incentives for all parties involved,' said Aravind Srinivasa, CEO of Perplexity. 'We're grateful to the publishers who participated in this program and provided us with valuable feedback on how it should be run. We've always believed we can build a system where the entire Internet wins, and this is just the first step.'

'TIME is committed to embracing innovative new technologies and platforms to advance our mission of providing trusted journalism to readers around the world,' said Mark Howard, TIME's chief operating officer. 'We are proud to join Perplexity's publisher program as a launch partner as we continue to expand access to trusted information and engage readers in new ways.'
