Google creates AI model for Indian roads designed to avoid narrow roads

Google has created an AI model of Google Maps that can take into account the width of the road and prompt the driver to avoid narrow roads. The model is specific to Indian roads and is expected to be an aid to drivers of four-wheelers.

Six ways we're enabling more and sustainable journeys on Google Maps in India, powered by AI and local partners

According to Google, the new model estimates road width by combining multiple sources of information, including satellite imagery, Street View, road type, distance between buildings, and paved sections. This road width estimate is then used to fine-tune the navigation system's routing algorithms, helping vehicles avoid narrow roads whenever possible, without significantly impacting travel time or distance.

When you approach a narrow road, a 'Narrow Road' warning will appear on the map.

Google said, 'India has a diverse range of roads, which presents complex challenges for this initiative. But we are committed to continuously learning and improving the feature based on what we see and your feedback. We are launching the feature exclusively on Android in Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Coimbatore, Indore, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar and Guwahati, and look forward to bringing the service to iOS and more cities soon.'

In addition, Google has improved the display of elevated roads across India. According to Google, elevated roads are widespread in many Indian cities, and it was difficult to determine whether or not to take an elevated road on an unfamiliar route in a city. Therefore, Google has introduced a new feature to guide you to an elevated road along the recommended route. With this feature, when you approach an elevated road, 'Take flyover' will be displayed on Google Maps.

Additionally, Google is also the first to surface two-wheeler specific EV charging stations on Google Maps, with India being the first country to do so with plans to expand to more locations in the future.

'These new features demonstrate our commitment to making digital maps more useful for users, businesses, developers and society at large. We look forward to continuing our innovation journey in India,' Google said.
