Since you cannot see the actual product on online stores like Amazon, reviews from people who have actually purchased the product have a big influence on consumer decision-making. However, some sellers on Amazon run campaigns offering '5-star ratings and Amazon gift cards', which can lead to situations where you buy a product because it has high reviews, only to find that it is of poor quality.

Here are some examples of products that are suspected of being inflated with fake reviews. The following product, which claims to be an insecticide, has 1,440 reviews and an overall rating of 4.2 stars.

When you look at the 5-star reviews, you'll see a long list of unnatural reviews, such as 'reviews that give the product 5 stars even though they haven't used it yet' or 'reviews that point out the product's bad points but still give it 5 stars.'

On the other hand, the reviews with one star included comments such as 'I was deceived' and 'I was not bitten even once by mosquitoes.' Furthermore, information was also posted about a fake review campaign that offered a 1,000 yen Amazon gift certificate if you gave it a five star rating.

' Fakespot ', developed by a company under Mozilla, is an app that can detect fake reviews like the ones mentioned above using AI, and can evaluate the reliability of reviews displayed on 'Amazon', 'Best Buy', 'Sephora', 'Walmart', and 'mail order sites using Shopify'. Based on the information collected by Fakespot from June 1, 2023 to May 31, 2024, Amazon's 'Top 5 product categories with the most fake reviews' and 'Top 5 product categories with the most reliable reviews' were announced. The rankings for each are as follows.

Top 5 product categories with the most fake reviews
1st place: Slides (sandal-like footwear that can be quickly put on)
2nd place: Pajamas
3rd place: Basketball
4th place: Stick vacuums and electric brooms

◆Top 5 product categories with the most reliable reviews

2nd place: Video game chairs
3rd place: Books

According to Mozilla, the Slides product with the most fake reviews had 75% of reviews rated as 'untrustworthy,' while Apple, which topped the trust rankings, had only 5% untrustworthy reviews.
