Dyson CEO Hanno Kilner said in a media statement on July 9, 2024, 'We have grown rapidly but, like all companies, we regularly review our global structure to prepare for the future. As part of this, we are proposing organizational changes which may result in the redundancy of jobs.'

Kilner also explained that the job cuts were a response to intensifying global competition, saying: 'We operate in an increasingly competitive global marketplace and the pace of innovation and change is only accelerating.'

According to Dyson's most recent financial report released in October 2023, the company's annual profit for 2022 fell slightly from £10.2 million (about 2.12 billion yen) the previous year to £9.6 million (about 2 billion yen) due to declining sales.

Dyson has pledged to support those at risk of losing their jobs, and it is not yet clear whether the cuts will affect its 14,000 other jobs around the world.

'I found out about the layoffs on the news and then got an email,' a worker at a Dyson factory in Bristol, England, told the British tabloid Daily Mail.

Dyson was founded in Malmesbury, Wiltshire in the southwest of England in 1991, but in 2002 it moved its manufacturing base from Malmesbury to Malaysia and then moved to Asia. In 2019, with Asia now accounting for the majority of its manufacturing and sales, Dyson moved its headquarters to Singapore.

The move to Singapore drew criticism as 'hypocritical' because founder James Dyson voiced his support for Britain's withdrawal from the European Union, known as Brexit, in 2016. However, the company explained that the move was unrelated to Brexit.

The restructuring will see Dyson's UK workforce reduced from 3,500 to 2,500, but Dyson's engineering and technology research lab will still remain in Malmesbury. CNBC reported that 'the UK is expected to remain an important research and development base for Dyson.'
