'We need to build a variety of AI to reflect different interests of people. I don't think AI technology should be monopolized or used by any one company to build a single core product,' Zuckerberg said in the interview, criticizing companies that develop AI technology as closed source.

Zuckerberg added, 'I get so tired of hearing from people in tech about building the 'One True AI,'' he said. 'They think they're creating God or something, but that's simply not what we're doing. I don't think it's going to happen.'

'I don't think building a closed AI platform is the way to create the best experience for people,' Zuckerberg said. 'I want to empower as many people as possible to try different things. And that's what culture is about. It's not about one group of people ruling for everyone.'

Zuckerberg added, 'When you're in an AI lab, it's tempting to feel like what you're doing is incredibly important - like, 'I'm building a single version of the truth for the future.' But in reality, things don't work that way. There's not just one app on people's phones. There's not just one content creator. There's not just one business that everyone wants.' He said AI should be built to reflect people's diverse interests.

TechCrunch, an IT news site, commented that Zuckerberg's comments come just after reports emerged that Meta had been in talks to integrate its AI into Apple's ecosystem but was turned down, so they come across as a bit of sour grapes.

As for the mixed reality (MR) technology that Meta is developing, the company is considering not only head-up displays with small LCD or OLED displays and lenses, but also smart glasses like Ray-Ban Meta and full holographic displays that show 3D images. However, Zuckerberg believes that 'in the short term, the former will be more popular.'

Zuckerberg predicted that in the future, MR will be deployed in three different styles: 'head-up display,' 'display-less smart glasses,' and 'full holographic display.' He also said that by using a wristband-type controller, it will be possible to operate the device with a neural interface without moving your hands much.

This 'wristband-type controller' was researched by CTRL-Labs, a startup acquired by Meta (then Facebook) in 2019, and Meta is still aiming to commercialize it as an input device for VR at the time of writing.
