It has been announced that the official name of the OS that has been installed on Meta Quest devices so far has become 'Meta Horizon OS.' In response to this, the 'Meta Quest Store,' which releases apps for Meta Quest devices, will be renamed to 'Meta Horizon Store,' and the mobile apps that link with Meta Quest devices on smartphones will be renamed to 'Meta Horizon Apps.'

In addition to the Meta Quest store, there is also a place called 'App Lab' where any developer who meets the requirements can release their own apps, but Meta says it will 'remove the barriers between the Meta Horizon store and App Lab.'

Opening up the Meta Horizon OS to third-party companies means that other companies can develop devices that run the same OS as Meta Quest and can run Meta Quest apps. According to Meta, ASUS gaming brand Republic of Gamers (ROG) and Lenovo are already developing mixed reality devices with Meta Horizon OS.

'We've been inspired by the incredible gaming community around virtual reality and mixed reality, and we know that the most passionate gamers demand high-performance hardware,' said SY Hsu, co-CEO of ASUS. 'With Meta Horizon OS, ASUS and Republic of Gamers are building the next generation of gaming headsets.'

Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing also commented, 'Mixed reality is transforming how people interact with computers by blending digital experiences with physical spaces to take productivity, learning and play to new levels. Building on the success of our past partnerships, Lenovo will combine Meta Horizon OS with Lenovo's leadership and innovation in personal computing to accelerate the deployment of new mixed reality use cases, such as virtual screens, remote presence, content consumption and immersive training.'

In addition, Meta revealed that it is partnering with Microsoft's gaming division Xbox to work together on a 'limited edition Xbox-inspired Meta Quest.' However, no details have been announced about what the Xbox-exclusive Meta Quest will be.

This isn't the first time that Meta and Xbox have partnered with each other to develop the Xbox-exclusive Meta Quest, as Xbox Cloud Gaming is now officially available on Meta Quest devices.

Meta said, 'We benefit from a long-term collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies, which manufactures Snapdragon processors that are deeply integrated into Meta's software and hardware stack.' The company said that not only the Xbox limited edition Meta Quest, but also devices being developed by ASUS and Lenovo will use 'mixed reality chips' such as the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 used in the Meta Quest 3.

'The convergence of physical and digital spaces is accelerating, and we believe virtual, mixed and augmented reality will be the next computing platforms,' said Cristiano Amon, CEO of Qualcomm. 'To deliver this future, these high-performance devices require an entirely new class of Snapdragon processor. Our collaboration with Meta has created an incredible experience that will set an industry benchmark, and we're excited to watch this new ecosystem take shape.'

In a video posted to Instagram, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said, 'In every era, there have been open and closed models of computing. In the age of the PC, the open model will win.' He said that Meta's goal is to make Meta Horizon OS as open as Google's Android and define the next generation of computing.
