ByteDance subsidiary PICO has announced details of its 'Project Swan' headset, scheduled for release in 2026, featuring a 4000ppi ultra-high-definition Micro OLED display and a new XR OS, 'PICO OS 6.'

PICO, a developer of VR (virtual reality) devices, has announced that it will release its next-generation

XR (cross reality) flagship model worldwide in 2026. The device will feature a specially designed chip, a high-resolution display, and a specially designed operating system called 'PICO OS 6.'

Next-generation XR hardware will be XR devices equipped with ultra-high-definition 4000ppi micro OLED displays, boasting a resolution of up to 40 PPD (pixels per degree), reaching 45 PPD in the central field of view, enabling a crystal-clear 4K resolution viewing experience with one eye.

The mixed reality chip, which took three years to develop, delivers real-time sensing, spatial computing, and image processing with 12 millisecond latency, delivering 'incredibly stable and natural mixed reality experiences.'

The 4000 ppi figure is about nine times that of existing high-end smartphones. PICO also claims that its custom chipset has twice the CPU and GPU performance of the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor found in

the Samsung Galaxy XR .

The project to announce the next generation of XR hardware is called 'Project Swan,' and 'PICO OS 6,' which was specially designed for this project, was also announced at the same time.

PICO OS 6 is described as a 'ground-up reconstruction of the spatial operating system,' allowing 2D apps, 3D experiences, virtual environments, and the physical world to coexist seamlessly, eliminating the friction that has long been a problem with XR OS.

The defining breakthrough of PICO OS 6 is the 'PICO Spatial Engine,' which moves the rendering pipeline from the app level to the OS level, instead of splitting rendering at the app level as in the past. By doing so, PICO OS 6 maintains high responsiveness while simultaneously rendering 2D, 3D, virtual environments, and the physical world. 'Multiple 3D apps and 2D windows work in harmony, creating a seamless experience where virtual elements blend naturally into the real world,' PICO explains.

PICO OS 6 also supports a diverse app ecosystem, including Spatial apps, OpenXR, WebXR, Android apps, web apps, and PC VR streaming. 'By continually lowering the barrier to entry, PICO offers developers a unique path to truly contribute, integrating different ecosystems into one seamless user experience,' the company said. Tools such as the PICO Spatial SDK have already been released .

Next-generation XR hardware is expected to be released in late 2026.
