Apple executive explains why 'Apple Intelligence requires iPhone 15 Pro or later'

'

Apple Intelligence ' is a new AI system that will be introduced in iOS 18 , iPadOS 18 , and macOS Sequoia , which uses large-scale language models to improve the user experience. The hardware requirement for this Apple Intelligence is 'iPhone 15 Pro with A17 Pro chip or later,' and it has been reported that an Apple executive explained the reason for this at the event.

The explanation was given at an event called 'The Talk Show Live From WWDC 2024,' hosted by developer John Gruber, who runs the developer blog 'Daring Fireball.'

Appearing at the event were Apple's vice president of AI and Machine Learning, John Zinandrea, vice president of Marketing, Greg Joswiak, and vice president of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi.

During the WWDC24 keynote, Apple listed the A17 Pro chip and M series as hardware requirements for Apple Inteligence.

Therefore, it has been pointed out that the only iPhone models that support Apple Intelligence at the time of writing are the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, and most iPhone users will not be able to experience it.

Regarding this, Gruber asked Ginn Andrea, Joswiak, and Federighi at the event, 'Apple Intelligence doesn't work on iPhones and Macs that don't meet the requirements, so why did you cut them out?'

'Running a language model is called 'inference,' and inference on large language models is incredibly computationally expensive, so it's a combination of the bandwidth of the device, the size of the Apple Neural Engine, and the power of the device that allows us to run these models fast enough to be useful. In theory, older devices could run the models, but they would be too slow to be useful,' Gindrea said.

'Is this a plan to sell new iPhones?' Gruber joked. Joswiak laughed and denied it. 'No, it's not,' Federighi said. 'When Apple introduces new features, we first look at making them compatible with older devices as much as possible. But with Apple Intelligene, it's all about the hardware we need. It's pretty extraordinary to have an iPhone with this power.'

The iPhone 15/15 Plus is equipped with the A16 Bionic chip, while the iPhone 15 Pro/15 Pro Max is equipped with the A17 Pro chip. The A17 Pro chip is equipped with a 16-core Neural Engine that is up to twice as fast as the A16 Bionic chip and can perform 35 trillion operations per second. In addition, the iPhone 15/15 Plus has 6GB of RAM, while the iPhone 15 Pro/15 Pro Max has 8GB of RAM. When Gruber asked about RAM, Gin'Andrea replied, 'Of course. Both the Neural Engine and RAM are part of the whole.'

Gruber then asked, 'Are you prepared for users to actually use Apple Intelligence correctly?' Gindrea replied, 'I'm not going to recommend using glue to stick cheese on pizza, ' drawing laughter from the audience. 'Of course, there are hallucinations and safety concerns that are unique to language models,' he said. 'We need to be more careful because users are using Apple devices for their own purposes and creative reasons,' he said, highlighting the difficulty of striking that balance.

CEO Tim Cook also commented on the accuracy and safety of Apple Intelligence, and you can check the contents in the following article.
