New Feature: Thumbnail Testing and Comparison - YouTube
'Thumbnail Test and Compare' is a feature available in the desktop version of YouTube Studio when publishing a new video or updating an existing video, which allows you to upload up to three thumbnails for your video.
YouTube will then display the selected thumbnails equally to viewers of the video and determine which thumbnail gets the most view time. YouTube commented, 'Some people call this an A/B test, but this 'Thumbnail Test & Compare' takes it a step further by comparing three thumbnails.'
It can take anywhere from a few days to two weeks to get results after starting a thumbnail test. YouTube says, 'The time it takes to get test results depends on a variety of factors, including the number of impressions your video gets and the differences in your thumbnails.'
Once the thumbnail that performs overwhelmingly well in the thumbnail test is selected, it will be labeled as the 'winner' and automatically set as the thumbnail for the video by YouTube.
In addition, if there is not much difference between multiple thumbnails in the test results, the thumbnail with the best results will be displayed as 'recommended'. YouTube said, 'We are pleased to announce that we will begin rolling out 'Thumbnail Test and Compare', which gives you access to advanced features, to all creators in the coming weeks.'
Of course, if you prefer a different thumbnail regardless of the test results, you can always stop the test and manually select a thumbnail.
