X (formerly Twitter) will soon launch a free 'private like' feature, allowing anyone to use the paid feature to like without others knowing
The Verge, an IT news site, reported that the 'privacy feature' that was previously available to paid members of X (formerly Twitter) will be available to general users as early as June 12, 2024.

X has offered a feature to hide the 'Like' tab for paid members since September 2023, and in May 2024, the company's engineering director, Haofei Wang, indicated his intention to make the 'Like' tab private, saying that displaying the 'Like' tab encourages inappropriate behavior.

Then, on June 12, 2024, The Verge reported, citing anonymous sources, that X would introduce a 'private like' feature as early as that same day.
Wang also posted on the same day, saying, 'We're launching something today,' hinting at the release of new features.

According to Enrique Barragan, a senior software engineer at X, with the feature in place, you'll still be able to see who liked your posts and how many times they liked them, but you won't be able to see who other users liked or view them in the 'Likes' section of their profiles.
Some clarifications on the private likes change:

- You will be able to see who liked your posts
- you can see the like count for all posts / replies / etc
- you cannot see the people who liked someone else's post
- you cannot see others 'Liked' tab on their profile
'This makes sense, as social media in general has become less about likes,' a source told The Verge. 'Also, part of me thinks Musk just wants to distance himself from X.'
Responding to The Verge's report, X owner Elon Musk said, 'It's important that anyone can like a post without being attacked for doing so.'
