Apple's iPhone 15 series will get security updates for at least five years from September 2023, but that's shorter than Samsung and Google

Until now, Apple had not clearly defined the security support period for iPhones, during which they could receive security updates, but after becoming subject to the UK regulations, it has now clearly defined the security support period as 'five years.' Regarding this, a Google executive said, 'Apple has a shorter security support period than Samsung and Google.'

The UK's Security of Products and Communications Infrastructure Regulations (PSTI) came into force on 29 April 2024. These regulations require companies that manufacture, import or distribute internet-enabled products in the UK to comply with certain security requirements.

According to the provisions of the PSTI regulation, 'support period' is defined as 'the minimum period during which security updates are provided, represented by the end date,' and 'security updates' are defined as 'software updates that protect or enhance the security of the product, including software updates that address security issues discovered or reported to the manufacturer.'

Since the iPhone is subject to this PSTI regulation, Apple must comply with the PSTI requirements. Apple has specified that the support period for the iPhone 15 Pro Max (model number: A3106) will be 'at least five years from the date of first supply.' The date of first supply is the release date, September 22, 2023. In other words, the iPhone 15 series is officially guaranteed to receive security updates until September 22, 2028.

Following Apple's announcement that the iPhone 15 will be supported for five years, Dave Kleidermacher, Google's vice president of Android Security and Privacy Engineering, said on the business SNS LinkedIn that Google has committed to seven years of security updates for devices from Pixel 8 onwards. 'Apple has been providing security updates for more than five years for a long time, and that's commendable. However, it's time to

acknowledge that Android, not iOS, now offers the best security longevity in the smartphone industry.'

On the other hand, Android Authority, a news site that handles Android-related information, said, 'Apple has not previously offered a minimum software support guarantee, but has often been better than other companies when it comes to updates.' For example, Apple released a security update for iOS 15 for the iPhone 6s, which was released in 2015, in March 2024.

Android Authority commented, 'Samsung and Google have the edge over Apple in terms of software support warranties, but that doesn't mean iPhone users can't keep using their phones for the same or even longer. We can only hope that Apple doesn't end support after the five-year minimum.'
