X (formerly Twitter) finally announces policy allowing adult content
X (formerly Twitter) has had adult content on its platform for a long time, but there were no rules explicitly prohibiting or allowing adult content. However, X has announced a new policy on adult content, and has finally announced that it will allow some adult content to be posted.

On June 4, 2024, X announced new policies on adult and violent content . Regarding the new policies, X stated, 'We are launching new policies on adult and violent content to clarify our rules and increase transparency in enforcement in these areas. These policies replace our previous policies on sensitive media and violent speech, but there is no change to what we enforce. Adult content covers our approach to consensual sexual content and the sharing of adult nudity. Violent content covers violent speech and media to enable a more holistic approach to combating all forms of violence.'

Adult…
The new adult content policy allows users to post adult content on X. However, adult content must be prominently labeled and only 'adult content created with the user's consent' can be posted. The new rules also apply to AI-generated adult content.
X has been testing posting adult content since around March 2024, and Dongwook, an engineer at X, said, 'NSFW content will soon be automatically filtered in all communities. Administrators can opt out of automatic content filtering by setting 'adult content' in the settings.
The labels that will be attached to adult content are as follows. However, since the screenshots below are from March 2024, they may look different when implemented as a feature available to general users.
The new adult content policy explains why some adult content will be allowed: 'We believe that users should be able to create, distribute, and consume material related to sexual themes, as long as it is produced and distributed consensually. Visual or written sexual content can be a legitimate form of artistic expression.'
X also stated, 'We believe in the autonomy of adults to engage with and create content that reflects their own beliefs, desires and experiences, including those related to sexuality. We balance this freedom by limiting exposure to adult content for children and adult users who do not want to view it,' explaining that the company will not recommend adult content to users who do not want it.
A similar statement exists in X's new policy on violent content, but it makes it clear that content 'must not be excessively gory or depict sexual violence. In addition, X explains that it will continue to prohibit content that explicitly threatens, incites, or glorifies violence.'
In addition, adult and violent content will not be displayed to users under the age of 18 or users who have not entered their date of birth. TechCrunch, a technology media company, points out that the new adult content policy may allow services centered on adult content to be built on X.
According to an internal document of the former Twitter obtained by Reuters , about 13% of the content posted on the platform contained adult content as of 2022. Given the sharp increase in porn bots since 2022, TechCrunch speculates that the proportion of adult content may have increased at the time of writing.
Because X explicitly allows adult content, TechCrunch noted, 'regulators will undoubtedly be taking a hard look at X's efforts to eliminate non-consensual pornography and child sexual abuse content (CSAM).'
