Jacqueline Sabek, an entertainment industry lawyer based in San Francisco, said, 'In the past, many artists avoided performing at private parties because they thought it was uncool. So, private parties were usually performed by artists who specialized in private parties, known as 'nostalgia performers.'
However, in recent years, famous artists such as Beyonce,
Robert Norman, head of private events at talent agency CAA, reports, 'When I joined the firm decades ago, we were booking 100 to 200 events a year. In 2022, that number has grown to roughly 600, leading us to create a team dedicated to booking private events.'
The New Yorker gives two reasons why pop stars would perform at such private parties:
The first is the decline in artists' music income. In the past, artists earned income through record sales, which peaked in 1999. However, the rise of download sales and other methods has led to a decline in artists' income. Some artists have lost more than 50% of their peak income. In recent years, music subscription services such as Spotify and Apple Music have become popular, but artists only earn a small amount of income from the companies that run these services.
The second reason is that the number of billionaires in the United States has tripled since 2000. This means that with the uncertainty of income for artists and the sudden increase in the wealthy, more and more wealthy people are inviting pop stars to private parties, and more artists are responding to this.
On the other hand, there are also negative opinions about pop stars' participation in private parties. One music company executive criticized, 'A pop star appeared at a private charity show to eradicate cancer, but was still paid by the organizers.' In 2013, when Jennifer Lopez celebrated the birthday of former Turkmenistan President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov at an event for Turkmenistan's top officials, the Human Rights Foundation, a human rights organization, pointed out that 'Jennifer Lopez was paid at least $10 million (about 1.5 billion yen) for celebrating the birthday of Turkmenistan's dictator.'
Elsewhere, rapper Nicki Minaj came under fire in 2015 for receiving $2 million for attending a party hosted by a company linked to former Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos . In response, she said, 'All criticism of me will ultimately be vindicated.'
Every tongue that rises up against me in judgement shall be condemned.

Adam Harrison, manager of Fitz and the Tantrums , among others, has warned some of his clients not to invite their artists to private parties. He also says he tells his artists to 'refrain from performing at any concert that puts their own values at the mercy of others.'
