The DC-1's 10.5-inch proprietary display is called 'LivePaper' and, unlike displays on other devices, is not backlit. This allows users to use the device comfortably all day while reducing health concerns caused by blue light .

Daylight Computer CEO Anjan Katta said, 'We founded the company to fight eye strain and distraction and to redefine our relationship with gadgets.' In addition, while they tried to develop a tablet that was an e-paper device like Amazon's e-reader Kindle but boasted computer-like functionality, conventional E-ink had issues with page switching speed and a phenomenon called 'ghosting,' in which black displays remain like shadows.

So Daylight Computer began developing its own e-paper display in 2018. The first proof of concept was produced in late 2021, and was completed in 2024. CEO Katta said about LivePaper, 'We have spent years developing the world's best e-paper display. LivePaper is manufactured exclusively at a display factory in Japan.'

In fact, LivePaper has a refresh rate of 60Hz, allowing for smoother scrolling, page turning, browsing, and more, far exceeding that of existing e-paper displays.

'There are many cases where traditional E-ink is better, such as bistability, viewing angle, and white vividness, but if you're using the DC-1 as a more general-purpose computer that can run Google Docs and do high-speed multi-touch, LivePaper is better because it responds faster and doesn't have ghosting,' Cutta said.

In addition, LivePaper's visibility is high, so there are no problems even if you take the device outside during the day.

In addition, the display surface has a matte finish, so you can write and draw on it just like you would on real paper.

The DC-1 is equipped with

a MediaTek Helio G99 processor, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and runs the company's own Android 13-based OS, SolOS.

The DC-1 also comes with a

Wacom stylus, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The DC-1 weighs 1.2 pounds (about 540 grams).

In addition, the battery capacity is 8000mAh, and according to Daylight Computer, since it does not have a backlight, the battery capacity is enough to last for several days on a single charge.

DC-1 can be reserved from the following page, the price is 729 dollars (about 114,000 yen). In addition, it does not support shipping to Japan, and a deposit of 100 dollars (about 15,000 yen) is required for reservations, and at the time of writing, it will be shipped after September 30, 2024.
