Atrial fibrillation is a type of arrhythmia in which the atria , the two upper chambers of the heart, contract in a rapid manner that differs from the normal beat. When this condition occurs, not only does it reduce the amount of blood pumped out of the heart and make it less efficient, but it also causes blood in the atria to stagnate, making it more likely for blood clots to form, which increases the risk of strokes and other conditions if left untreated.
It is estimated that there are approximately one million people with atrial fibrillation in Japan, and the duration of atrial fibrillation can be reduced by regular exercise, a healthy diet, maintaining weight, adequate sleep, anticoagulant therapy to prevent cerebral infarction, etc. However, Apple points out that until now there has been no easy way to record the frequency of atrial fibrillation over a long period of time or to manage lifestyle factors that affect health conditions.
The 'Atrial Fibrillation History' feature is now available to Apple Watch users in Japan on iOS 17.0 and later and watchOS 10.0 and later. By turning on atrial fibrillation history, users in Japan can now access important information, such as an estimate of the time they had symptoms of atrial fibrillation.
Users will receive weekly notifications about when they experience atrial fibrillation, and can also view a detailed history of lifestyle factors that may be related to atrial fibrillation in Health. They can also download a PDF of their atrial fibrillation and lifestyle factor history for further conversation with their doctor.
Dr. Kyoko Soejima, head of the Department of Cardiology at Kyorin University School of Medicine, expressed her hopes for the use of atrial fibrillation history, saying, 'The atrial fibrillation history will enable the Apple Watch to assess the user's atrial fibrillation burden, which can be further used to help doctors evaluate the effectiveness of rhythm therapy. Patients will also be able to gain a deeper understanding of their own health condition with information such as exercise time, sleep time, and alcohol intake, which can be used to maintain their health.'
The Apple Watch's atrial fibrillation history feature has already been officially approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a Medical Device Development Tool (MDDT). The FDA stated, 'Apple Watch's atrial fibrillation history feature is the first digital healthcare technology approved under the MDDT program and provides a non-invasive method of confirming estimates of atrial fibrillation burden within clinical studies.'
