According to Bloomberg, Apple is proposing a new performance-based compensation system, which would pay actors a 'points-based' salary. The amount would be determined based on three criteria: the number of people who subscribe to Apple TV+ and watch the show, the amount of time the viewer spends watching, and the cost of the show relative to the size of the audience. Actors in the top three most popular shows could split up to $10.5 million a season.

The plan is still in its infancy, and Apple is still seeking feedback from stakeholders, and it doesn't appear it will be rolled out to all shows.

Many in Hollywood are unhappy with their current pay, and the backlash against low wages has escalated into major strikes.

According to Bloomberg, the 'exclusive contract' business model started by Netflix is powerful, and initially more screenwriters and actors signed exclusive contracts in order to receive the large amounts of money they could receive. However, as other companies began to copy them, more and more workers are now feeling like they are being paid less than they were when they had free contracts.

Given this situation, Netflix and Amazon have also devised 'performance-based compensation systems' similar to Apple's, and are trying to change the industry system.

The hope is that by making compensation performance-based, workers will be more closely linked to their performance, ideally leading to better content production.
