A VALORANT player's rape remarks in voice chat go viral, leading to a game producer apologizing. Can harmful gamers be eradicated once and for all?

A female Twitch streamer confessed to being sexually assaulted over in-game voice chat and called for the perpetrator to be severely punished. This call went viral and reached the game producer, sparking a heated discussion about how to deal with harassment in online games.

If you have played various online games, you will know that competitive games such as FPS and MOBA are more likely to involve abusive language from other players than other games.

On May 13, 2024, Twitch streamer Taylor Morgan confessed that while playing the FPS game VALORANT, other players had verbally abused her, threatening to 'rape' her.

Morgan cut out the scene and posted it on X (formerly Twitter). Mentioning Riot Games, the game's operator, he said, 'I need you guys to do something. I'm an incredibly strong person and I've been streaming for a very, very long time, but I'm not ready for this to happen. Account suspensions are not enough to combat this kind of behavior, we need hardware-level bans to prevent people from ever playing the game again. If this goes unpunished, Riot Games doesn't care about the women and minorities who play their games, and we will rally together to boycott them.'

This report caused a big reaction from gamers. Actor Dave Jones, who voiced characters in ' Baldur's Gate 3 ,' commented, 'Companies need to acknowledge the problem and ban these scumbags for good. Andrew Tate's (famous for his sexist remarks) mindset should go away immediately.' Lizette Tittle-Montgomery, art director of ' Psychonauts 2 ,' agreed with Morgan, pointing out that 'toxic players are causing billions of dollars of damage per year.' Jaime Griesemer, designer of ' Halo 2, ' said , 'After a female player showed us what was going on in Halo 2's close-range chat (where you can hear voices when you get close to someone), we cut the feature from Halo 3 the next day,' indicating that it is virtually impossible to eliminate abusive language.

There has also been some opposition to Morgan, with some claiming that his comments 'weren't that bad' and others saying he 'should have just let it go.'

The report was also sent to VALORANT executive producer Anna Dolan, who said, 'I'm so sorry you had to go through this. We're taking action on the accounts, but we know it's not enough. Our team is constantly working to develop tools to combat this, but there is always room for improvement. I hope we'll solve this problem one day, and while you have no reason to believe me, I promise you this means a lot to us and is a big priority.'

When asked whether the 'hardware-level ban' mentioned by Morgan would be possible, Dolan replied, 'We've looked at it. There are some complications, but it's something we could implement in the future.'

Morgan received a disconnection penalty for disconnecting the game immediately after receiving the harassment, but this was later lifted. The disconnection penalty warning ironically stated, 'Teamwork and respect are essential to winning together as a team.'
