Pichai, who has said since becoming CEO in 2015 that 'the company should be AI first,' noted that Google was not the first company to create a browser or email, but has gained a large market share in both. He also said that AI is 'in its infancy and will continue to develop, and we are driving the advancement of AI.'

Because it is still in its infancy, various problems related to AI have also emerged. When asked about Google's AI 'Gemini' generating inappropriate images because it placed too much emphasis on diversity, Pichai apologized, saying, 'We are a company that provides services around the world, and we must set appropriate settings for users around the world, but in this case, we made a mistake by setting excessive settings, including cases where they should not be applied.' He responded that he intends to deal with the issue appropriately because he has a clear responsibility.

When asked about the worsening quality of Google searches and the rise of bad sites that are only interested in getting to the top of search results, Pichai said, 'Every time there's a transition, there's an explosion of new content. Now it's AI. So I think that point you've made is a challenge for us. Getting it right is necessary to have a quality product, and I think that's core to the success of search.'

Although Pichai avoided specific answers in this interview, Google made a major announcement through Director of Product Management Elizabeth Tucker about an initiative to eliminate low-quality pages with an emphasis on SEO in March 2024. According to the announcement, the company will strengthen its algorithm and take measures against spam to address content that is not valuable to users.

Google also incorporates AI into its search results, and sometimes presents answers to users' search terms in search results. However, such efforts could lead to the destruction of websites that make money by having people visit their pages. When asked about such efforts, Pichai said, 'I think we've always been able to strike a balance.'

By the way, Pichai's son sometimes uses Google Lens to solve math problems.

In April 2024, Google employees protested against Google's cooperation with Israel in the wake of the armed conflict between Israel and the Gaza Strip. Pichai responded by firing some employees. When asked about this, Pichai said, 'When an employee violates company rules to reduce productivity in the workplace or make others feel uncomfortable, I believe I must take action. That's all, and it has nothing to do with the topic the person in question is discussing.'
