AMD raises certification requirements for game flicker reduction technology 'FreeSync' to 144Hz or higher, 60Hz monitors are no longer eligible

AMD has developed

FreeSync , a technology that reduces monitor flickering during game play, and has granted FreeSync certification to monitors that support FreeSync. It has become clear that the authentication requirements for FreeSync have been raised.

If the ``number of times the GPU outputs the screen per second (frame rate)'' falls below the ``number of times the monitor draws the screen per second (refresh rate)'', ``the time has come to redraw the screen, but A situation may occur where the output from the GPU is not up to date, so we have no choice but to display the same frame as last time, and the screen display may flicker. FreeSync is a technology that adjusts the refresh rate according to the frame rate, allowing you to play games with high load that tend to slow GPU processing without flickering.

Below is an image showing the effect of FreeSync. If FreeSync is off and the frame rate falls below the refresh rate, the screen display may shift as shown below. This discrepancy is perceived by the player as a momentary flicker.

If FreeSync is enabled, flickering can be suppressed even when the frame rate drops.

Monitors that support FreeSync can receive FreeSync certification from AMD. For a while after FreeSync was introduced in 2015, monitors with a refresh rate of 60Hz were able to receive FreeSync certification, but AMD said, ``When FreeSync was introduced in 2015, 60Hz was optimal for gaming. FreeSync will be released in September 2023 for reasons such as 'In 2015, even 120Hz monitors were rare, but at present, the majority of gaming monitors have a refresh rate of 144Hz or higher.' It was revealed that the certification conditions had been raised.

The FreeSync certification conditions for monitors and TVs that will be applied from September 2023 are as follows. Monitors with a horizontal resolution of less than 3440 pixels must have a refresh rate of 144Hz or higher to be FreeSync certified. Additionally, monitors with a horizontal resolution of 3440 pixels or higher are eligible for FreeSync Premium certification, not FreeSync, and must have a refresh rate of 120Hz or higher to be certified.

Authentication type Certification conditions
FreeSync Horizontal resolution: less than 3440 pixels Refresh rate rate: 144Hz or more
FreeSync Premium Horizontal resolution: less than 3440 pixels Refresh rate rate: 200z or more

Horizontal resolution: 3440 pixels or more Refresh rate rate: 120Hz or more
FreeSync Premium Pro Compatible with FreeSync HDR while meeting FreeSync Premium requirements

On the other hand, the authentication conditions for FreeSync for notebook PCs have not changed and will continue to operate under the following conditions.
Authentication type Certification conditions
FreeSync Refresh rate: 40Hz to 60Hz
FreeSync Premium Refresh rate: 120Hz or higher
FreeSync Premium Pro Compatible with FreeSync HDR while meeting FreeSync Premium requirements

Please note that existing certified monitors will continue to be supported even after the FreeSync certification requirements have been increased.
