According to information obtained by Bloomberg from an anonymous Apple employee, Apple held a short 12-minute meeting on the morning of February 27, 2024, in which Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams and Project Kevin Lynch, vice president of Titan, announced the cancellation of Project Titan to employees.

Apple is likely to lay off hundreds of employees involved in Project Titan, and all work on the project has stopped at the time of writing. The anonymous employee who provided the information said the announcement came out of the blue. However, he explained that the decision to cancel was not sudden, as priorities are always changing within Apple.

According to Bloomberg, Project Titan officials who will remain within Apple will be in charge of the company's generative AI project. All other employees will have 90 days to find another role within the company or be terminated. Approximately 2,000 employees were working on Project Titan just before the cancellation, according to an anonymous employee.

The cancellation of Project Titan comes as major automakers are reevaluating their investments in electric vehicles and self-driving car projects come under increased scrutiny. Apple's entry into the car market was thought to be a new source of income for Apple, but multiple media have asked Apple for comment on this matter, but have not received a response.

Apple launched Project Titan in 2014, and at one time about 5,000 employees were working on the project. Several prominent figures in the automotive industry are involved in Project Titan, and Apple has pulled out talent from famous automakers such as Lamborghini and Ford. There was a time when former Tesla executive Doug Field led Project Titan, but he moved to Ford in 2021.
