Sony's full-frame mirrorless 'α9 III' shooting review, packed with advanced features such as 'global shutter', '120 shots per second', '8 stops of image stabilization'

Sony's mirrorless single-lens camera '

α9 III ', which was released on January 26, 2024, is the world's first to be equipped with a full-frame sensor with a global shutter method, making it possible to take distortion-free photos. Furthermore, the α9 III is equipped with an ultra-high-speed continuous shooting function of 120 frames per second, a function that automatically recognizes and focuses on the subject, and an 8-stop image stabilization function. I was able to borrow the α9 III from Sony, so I actually took some still images to check its performance.

You can check the details of α9 III's appearance and installed ports in the article below. This time, I attached the E-mount lens ' FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II ' to the α9 III, photographed a variety of subjects, and verified the effects of the global shutter and color reproduction performance. Please note that all of the photos in this article were taken handheld without using a tripod, and have not been edited other than to reduce the size for use on the web page.

I carefully checked the appearance and shutter sound of the global shutter full-size mirrorless single-lens camera 'α9 III' that can shoot 120 images per second - GIGAZINE

◆1: Equipped with a global shutter, no rolling shutter distortion occurs.
The sensors of most mirrorless single-lens cameras use a mechanism that reads out pixels in sequence, so when shooting with an electronic shutter, a phenomenon occurs in which the shape of objects that move at high speed is distorted. The α9 III is equipped with a global shutter sensor that reads out all pixels of the sensor simultaneously, allowing you to take distortion-free photos.

Below is a photo taken from the front with α9 III of a train passing through the station. If you take a picture of a moving train with a camera that does not have a global shutter, it will be distorted into a parallelogram, but with the α9 III I was able to take a picture without distortion.

Since no distortion occurs, it is possible to take photos of a train that is running without any distortion of the train or the platform, as shown below. Although the train is passing at high speed, it appears to be stationary.

Below is a photo taken with a slow shutter speed so that the train appears to be moving. Another unique feature of global shutter is that there is no rolling shutter distortion in flicker.

◆2: Mass-produce the best shots with 120 continuous shots per second and high-performance AF
The α9 III is equipped with a 'Subject Recognition AF' function that recognizes the subject and automatically focuses on it. The recognition target can be selected from ``person'', ``animal/bird'', ``animal'', ``bird'', ``insect'', ``car/train'', or ``plane''.

When the recognition target was set to 'car/train' and the camera was pointed at the train, the front of the train was surrounded by a square frame as shown below. If you take a picture in this state, you will be able to take a picture with the train in focus.

Additionally, the α9 III is equipped with an ultra-high-speed continuous shooting function of 120 frames per second. By combining subject recognition AF and ultra-high-speed continuous shooting, users can 'quickly point the camera at the subject, press and hold the shutter button at a time that looks good, and then use photo management software to select the best shot.' operation can be achieved.

The following photos were taken using a combination of subject recognition AF and ultra-high-speed continuous shooting. By taking 120 photos per second, we were able to capture the moment when the vehicle was in its best position.

◆3: Verified color reproduction performance
To test the color reproduction performance of the α9 III, I set all settings, including white balance, to auto and took photos of food.

The following is the result of taking a picture of bone-in meat at '

Nepal Restaurant Balpipal '. The burnt areas are depicted without any black spots.

The plate in the photo below is actually more orange-yellow, but it was depicted as whitish. This is probably due to the warm lighting.

I took a photo of

Matsuya's Shukumerli . The shadow of the pot looks a bit crushed.

The rice turned out to be more orange than the actual color. This may be because the setting sun was shining from the right side of the photo. α9 III When photographing food, it is better to adjust the white balance yourself rather than relying on the camera.

Below is a photo of the gaming notebook PC '

Razer Blade 16 ' box and power cable placed on a white desk indoors. Placing a black object on a white desk tends to mess up the exposure, but with the α9 III I was able to automatically set the exposure to just the right amount.

This photo was taken with a white power strip placed on a white desk. Part of the power strip has blended into the background. The α9 III's dynamic range seems to be narrower than that of a typical full-frame sensor camera.

◆4: Excellent dark performance
The previous generation model α9 II was equipped with 5.5 steps of image stabilization performance, but the α9 III has upgraded image stabilization performance to 8 steps. On the other hand, the maximum standard ISO sensitivity of the α9 II was 51,200, but the maximum standard ISO sensitivity of the α9 III has been lowered to 25,600. In order to verify the α9 III's shooting performance in dark places, we took photos under various conditions.

First, let's take a photo of the ``room with the lights off''. This is what the room looks like with the lights on.

When the lights are turned off, the white column in the foreground is only vaguely visible to the naked eye.

Below are photos taken with the following settings: 'focal length: 24 mm', 'shutter speed: 0.8 seconds', 'f value: 2.8', 'ISO sensitivity 12,800'. I was able to take photos that were overwhelmingly brighter than the naked eye. Despite the poor conditions of hand-held shutter speed of 0.8 seconds, I was able to take pictures without blur.

Move to the shrine at night. The only lighting is installed in the main shrine, and it is very dark to the naked eye as shown below.

Below are photos taken with 'focal length: 32mm', 'shutter speed: 1/13 seconds', 'f value: 2.8', 'ISO sensitivity 12,800'.

I displayed it at the same size and cropped a part. It is beautifully depicted without looking like a coloring book.

I tried to see if I could take pictures of the stars while holding the camera towards the sky.

Succeeded in photographing the Orion constellation. The shooting settings are ``focal length: 24 mm'', ``shutter speed: 1/5 second'', ``f value: 2.8'', and ``ISO sensitivity 12,800''.

I photographed flowers in a flowerbed using ``focal length: 58mm'', ``shutter speed: 1/13 seconds'', ``f number: 2.8'', and ``ISO sensitivity 12,800''. Colors such as purple, orange, white, and green can be reproduced.

When you display it at the same size and cut out a part, it looks like this. Noise is relatively low considering the ISO sensitivity of 12,800.

At the time of writing the article, the α9 III body alone is available at Amazon.co.jp for 792,000 yen including tax.
