Google finally ends caching on search results pages

It turns out that Google has been removing links that provide site caching from search results pages. At the time of writing the article, you can browse the cache by using the search operator 'cache:', but Google has announced that this feature will be discontinued in the near future.

Google Search had a caching feature that showed sites in their last visited state, which allowed Google to see the previous state of deleted or modified pages.

According to the IT news site Ars Technica, links to this feature have been no longer displayed in search results for some users since around December 2023. Search Engine Land, a news site specializing in SEO and search, reports that the link to the cache was officially deleted around January 25, 2024.

When I actually searched for it, I found that the cache was indeed not visible in the search results on Google at the time of article creation.

Danny Sullivan, the head of Google Search, posted on X (formerly Twitter) a post about the topic saying, 'Yes, it's been removed. I'm sad too. This is one of our oldest features. However, it was meant to help people access pages back in the days when you couldn't rely on the page to load. It's gotten a lot better these days, so I decided to retire it. ” and confirmed the deletion of the cache function.

Mr. Sullivan is considering adding a link to the Internet Archive, but cannot promise anything because he is currently in discussions with the Internet Archive.

At the time of writing the article, you can view the cache by entering ``cache:'' and searching for the URL of the site where you want to view the cache, but Sullivan said that this will also disappear in the near future.
