Introducing the “Grok” series of interactive toys for children equipped with chat AI

Toys that can talk to children have existed for some time, but the Grok series of interactive toys will be introduced as stuffed animals that can interact with a chat AI rather than playing recorded lines.

The 'Grok' series was produced by startup Curio in partnership with OpenAI, in collaboration with Grimes , a Canadian artist who is also known for being Elon Musk's partner and father of three children.

This rocket-shaped stuffed animal is 'Grok'. The voice is provided by Grimes. The design is by artist Puffy Puff Puff .

'Grok' is also the name of an AI chatbot owned by Elon Musk, but according to Curio, it is completely unrelated and was named by Grimes as a shortened version of the word 'Grocket.'

In April 2023, Mr. Grimes responded to a post on X (formerly Twitter) that said, ``If everything, including teddy bears, moved with intelligence, we would be able to spend our nights in peace.'' ``If it can be done safely, that's fine.'' 'It would be nice if the children were playing with something like a teddy bear because raising children is difficult.' This is what led him to work with Curio.

Curio CEO Misha Salley, Mr. Grimes, and Sam Eaton, president and chief toy maker. Grimes and his colleagues say they hope this toy will help reduce ``screen dependence'' on smartphones and other devices.

Although an internet connection is required for AI to work, Eaton and his colleagues say that in the future they would like to have all the hardware and software built into the toy.

The toy also comes with an app that allows parents to check the content of the interactions between their child and the toy. Recordings are made in accordance with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act and are deleted after 90 days. Also, it is said that the toy does not store any audio data in the first place.

'Grok', 'Grem' and 'Gabbo' are each priced at $90 (approximately 12,800 yen) and are currently accepting reservations. However, it will not arrive in time for Christmas presents, and the first shipment is expected to be in early 2024.
