X announced that it revised its policy on August 31, with the policy taking effect on September 29. In the section titled 'Operating, Improving, and Personalizing Our Services,' X states that 'We may use information we collect or publicly available to train machine learning or artificial intelligence models for the purposes outlined in this policy.'

The 'information to be collected' as defined by X in the policy includes display name, password, email address or phone number, date of birth, as well as information about the user's posts, live video activity (such as spaces), the content of messages when using reposts, likes, bookmarks, or direct messages, recipient information, IP address and related information, location, mobile phone carrier, browser type and language, and operating system.

In addition, X will also collect users' educational background, employment history, and biometric information.

The purposes for which the information will be used are defined in phrases such as 'to provide and operate X's products and services,' 'to show you more relevant content and ads, suggest people and topics to follow, and enable you to discover affiliated companies, third-party apps and services.'

There is no specific description of what the information will be used for. It is also not clear what information is being used for machine learning or AI training, but in response to the report that 'a description has been added about using X's data to train AI models,' Musk pointed out in a post to X that 'this only applies to public data, not DMs or private data.'

Musk has launched an AI startup called xAI, and in July 2023, he stated that he would use public tweets from Twitter to train AI models. This shows that this policy change is part of a plan that Musk has been preparing for some time, and is not a big leap.

However, whether users will accept these changes is another matter, and some users have voiced opposition.

X is not the only company that uses posts to train its AI; other companies also do the same: Facebook , Instagram , and Google . Meta in particular asks for understanding about the use of AI, explaining that 'our AI system will help us show content to users faster and reduce the distribution of problematic or low-quality content.'
