Bluesky announces that unlike X (formerly Twitter), it will not use posts to train AI

X updated its terms of use on November 15, 2024, clarifying that posts will be used for AI training, which has caused concern to spread in Japan, especially among illustrators. In response, rival SNS Bluesky stated that 'posts will not be used for AI training.'

'Bluesky uses AI internally to assist with content moderation, helping to triage posts and protect our human moderators from harmful content. We also use AI in our Discover feed algorithms to deliver posts we think you'll like. None of these are generative AI systems trained on user content.'

On the other hand, in the section 'User Rights and Grant of Rights to Content' under '3. Content on the Service' of its Terms of Service, X clearly explains that it uses posts on X to train AI, stating, 'You agree that our use of the Service includes the right to analyze the text and other information provided by you and to otherwise provide, promote, and improve the Service (including for training our machine learning and artificial intelligence models, whether generative or otherwise).'

Bluesky reported that 'more than 1 million new users joined in a week' after Donald Trump was elected in the US presidential election, but Meta's Threads still has the most users as a competitor to X, according to technology media TechCrunch. Threads has more than 275 million monthly active users, and in November 2024, it gained 15 million new users at the time of writing.
