'Ambulance shortage alert' started to appeal for timely and appropriate use of ambulances

While it took longer for ambulances to arrive at the scene, more than half of the people who were transported by ambulance were mildly ill patients who did not require hospitalization. The Tokyo Fire Department has started displaying 'Ambulance close alert'.

According to the Tokyo Fire Department, the average arrival time to the site was 7 minutes and 54 seconds in 2013. It has been shortened since then, and was 6 minutes and 29 seconds in 2020, but increased to 7 minutes and 20 seconds in 2021. In 2022, it has grown to 9 minutes and 43 seconds.

One of the reasons why the arrival time to the scene is increasing is that the number of emergency services is increasing in the first place. It seems that the number of entries in 2020 was 872,075, an increase of 128,372 from the previous year. However, looking at the breakdown of symptoms among those who were transported by ambulance, 53.4% had mild symptoms that did not require hospitalization.

When the ambulance dispatch rate exceeds 80%, the Tokyo Fire Department organizes an emergency ambulance platoon to increase the number of ambulances. From July 1, 2023, a 'Severe Response First Aid Platoon' will be formed to give priority to patients with a high degree of urgency. When such an emergency unit is organized, an 'ambulance emergency alert' will be issued on the official website and SNS.

In addition, materials are also released on what cases and situations should call an ambulance without hesitation.
