An accident occurred in which the handgun secretly brought in exploded with the magnetic force of MRI and the owner died

Nuclear magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a method of imaging the brain and blood vessels, which have a high water content, and is an indispensable technology for modern medical practice. In the case of such an MRI scan, it is prohibited to bring any metal products into the MRI scan because it interferes with the imaging and leads to the failure of electronic equipment. However, an accident occurred in Brazil in which a man was killed when a concealed handgun exploded near an MRI machine.

Novaes Matias de Novaes, an anti-gun control lawyer, was with his mother undergoing an MRI scan at Curra Hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil on January 16, 2023.

MRI uses powerful magnets and electromagnetic waves to take cross-sectional views of the inside of the body, so people undergoing MRI scans are prohibited from bringing in metal products such as electronic devices and accessories. Mr. Novaes also followed this rule and was warned to remove metal products, but he said he had a pistol hidden on his waist.

It is unknown what exactly happened after that, but when the MRI scan started, the gun was pulled out of Mr. Novaes' waist and exploded, and the bullet hit his abdomen. After more than two weeks of intensive treatment, Novaes passed away on February 6, 2023.

'As is customary in the past, the doctor asked the patient and accompanying person to agree to a ban on metal objects from the examination room,' Curra said. I did, but Mr. Novaes entered the examination room at his own discretion without mentioning possession of a handgun.'

Several accidents have occurred due to the strong magnetic force of MRI. In 2013, at a hospital in the state of Illinois, USA, an accident occurred in which the pistol of a police officer who was investigating a robbery case was pulled out by the magnetic force of the MRI, and the pistol was adsorbed to the MRI.

Also, in 2018, at a hospital in Mumbai, India, a man with an oxygen cylinder was drawn into an MRI and died from inhaling liquid oxygen that leaked from the cylinder due to the impact.
