``Robots are better treated than Amazon workers,'' the first strike broke out at the Amazon warehouse in the UK

On January 25, 2023, hundreds of Amazon warehouse workers in the United Kingdom went on a 24-hour strike to seek wages that did not match the rise in prices and improvements in the harsh working environment. This is the first time that Amazon has faced a formal labor dispute based on law in the UK, and participants in the strike complain that `` robots are better treated than treated like robots ''.

This strike was carried out all day at the Amazon fulfillment center in Coventry, a city in central England, commonly known as `` BHX 4 '', and large-scale demonstrations and picketing were held. Reportedly, 300 of the 1,000 warehouse workers took part in the dispute, which began at 12:01 a.m. local time on January 25.

Darren Westwood, one of the participants, said, 'We've all been pissed to see how much Amazon is making during the pandemic. So we need more pay.' The other day, someone said, 'We are treated like robots,' but robots are treated better.'

What sparked the dissatisfaction of warehouse workers in the UK was that Amazon raised wages in 2022 to 50 pence per hour (about 73 yen). As a result, the hourly wage of employees working in Coventry has been raised by 5% to 10.5 pounds (about 1680 yen), which is the minimum wage for British people over the age of 23 10.42 pounds (about 1670 yen) This is only marginally higher, and still short of December 2022 consumer price inflation of 10.5% year-on-year.

In order to improve these wage levels, warehouse workers are striking for an hourly wage of at least 15 pounds (about 2400 yen), which is close to the salary of Amazon employees in the United States.

Meanwhile, an Amazon spokesperson said in a statement to the media, ``Only a small percentage of employees participated in the strike, and only 1% of UK employees participated in the vote to strike. We thank our team for the great work they do and are proud to offer competitive salaries starting at a minimum of £10.50 to £11.45 an hour depending on location. In addition to wages, employees are also provided with private medical insurance, meal assistance, employee discounts, and comprehensive benefits.'

According to Amazon, wages for warehouse workers in the UK have risen by 29% since 2018, and a lump sum of 500 pounds (about 80,000 yen) has been paid due to the recent rise in living costs.

In January 2023, Amazon cut 18,000 employees, the largest number ever in North America and elsewhere. We have also started negotiations.

Amanda Gearing, local senior organizer for the GBM Union , which represents workers, tweeted: 'History was made today. Not only are we fighting for a better place to work, we are fighting for a better future.' I am honored to have spent this 24 hours picketing with the Amazon workers who are working,' and reported that the strike was successfully over.
