Cloudflare Announces Zero Trust eSIM 'Zero Trust SIM'

With far more mobile devices in use than PCs in the world and more opportunities to work remotely, such as from home, employee mobile devices are becoming a major

attack vector for businesses. Security service giant Cloudflare has announced `` Zero Trust SIM '' that protects the security of mobile devices that are often overlooked with zero trust.

Cloudflare updated its official blog on September 26, 2022 to announce `` Zero Trust SIM '', a security product aimed at smartphone users and data service companies.

Zero Trust SIM protects all packets sent from smartphones, and if it is available in the United States, it will be available as an eSIM that can be introduced to iOS and Android via existing mobile device management platforms.

John Graham-Cumming, CTO of Cloudflare, said in an interview with IT news media TechCrunch, ``Zero Trust SIM provides multiple layers of safety measures. VPN is also one of the security layers. However, mobile devices continue to have cellular connections, and traditional AnyConnect-style VPNs that work across devices are unable to prevent lateral movement of attackers inside the VPN. You can't do that,' he said, claiming that Zero Trust SIM provides a level of security that can't be achieved with a VPN or the like.

With Zero Trust SIM, Cloudflare rewrites DNS requests originating from the device and performs DNS filtering using Cloudflare Gateway. It also validates all hosts and IP addresses before they hit the Internet, and supports identity-based connections to other services and devices, so it can be used as a second factor of authentication, says Graham-Cumming. explains Mr.

The price of the Zero Trust SIM, which will start in the next few months, is unknown, but Graham-Cumming says the pricing is an extension of the current Zero Trust service.

Cloudflare also announced the Internet of Things platform, an IoT device management service, on the same day. Designed to compete with IoT management services from Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, and Google Cloud, this product will enable provisioning and management of cellular connectivity and security for IoT devices.

With this service, every packet originating from each IoT device is inspected, approved, or denied according to user-created policies before reaching the internet, the cloud, or other devices. In addition, it is possible to prevent sensitive traffic from flowing out to open networks by locking the device to a specific region.

Cloudflare said it will release more information in the coming months as it officially launches the IoT Platform.
