What is the problem found after using Apple Watch for 4 years of running?

With the spread of smart watches, it has become easier to record and closely manage your own health condition and exercise history. It summarizes the problems experienced by users who have been wearing the Apple Watch,

which has the largest share in the smartwatch market, for four years and running several times a week.

Mr. Runner, who used the iPhone to record running, said he had been recording using the Apple Watch Series 4 and Nike's running app since the end of 2018. However, Nike's application could not download the recorded data at first, so it seems that he started using Apple's workout application.

Mr. Runner's running route is almost the same every time, the total distance is about 9.7 km. Nike's app always recorded a mileage of 9.6 to 9.8 km, but it seems that there was sometimes a large deviation in the measured value. Also, when using Apple's workout app on watchOS 7, it seems that there were occasional abnormalities in the measured values. The content was that the position information suddenly warped during the measurement, and the running speed, direction, and running distance suddenly became completely different values.

And since watchOS 8, it seems that the measurement itself was unstable and abnormal values were recorded.

The graph below shows the transition of altitude (upper left) and running speed (lower). The left side of the red line is abnormal, and the right side is normal. Regarding the speed, the abnormality is quite remarkable, and when it is measured normally, the speed is generally kept around 15 km / h, but when there is an abnormality, it is recorded that the running speed changes drastically between 4 km / h and 30 km / h. In addition, it can be seen that the accuracy of the altitude data is considerably lower in abnormal conditions than in normal conditions. According to Runner, pausing to cross the pedestrian crossing fixed the measurement anomaly, as shown in the upper right graph.

Also, it seems that location information acquisition by GPS is performed exactly every second, that is, 60 times per minute, but in abnormal times it has decreased to about 50 times per minute.

Below is a summary of multiple running speed transition graphs when running the same route with watchOS 8 and 9. The part where the blurring is clearly large indicates that the measurement is abnormal. According to Mr. Runner, the measurement started in an abnormal state with a probability of about 80%, and on average it was not possible to measure properly for about 18 minutes.

Below is a summary of the mileage for each run. I am running a route of about 9.7km, but there is a large variation between 9.2km and 9.6km. The red dots are the cases where you paused at the beginning of the run and returned to normal, the blue dots are the cases where you didn't pause.

Below are the running speed graphs and maps displayed in Apple's fitness app. In the normal state (right), the running speed is constant and there is no abnormality in the route shown on the map. You can see that there is also

Runner introduces the following solutions as a result of running almost the same route every time for many years.

・Turn off Wi-Fi communication on Apple Watch and Bluetooth communication on iPhone, and disconnect Apple Watch and iPhone once before starting running.
- Restart or reset your Apple Watch before running.
・After opening the workout app, wait 30 seconds before running.
・As already reported on the forum, do not repeatedly uninstall and reinstall the app as it will fail to sync 'Music'.

Mr. Runner also contacted Apple's support and asked for a solution, but in the end the engineer said that 'a series of errors is within the allowable range'. It seems that he was hoping that watchOS 9 and iOS 16 would solve this problem, but it has not been solved at the time of writing the article, and since the update, the XML file that outputs the data has been broken. thing.

Runner acknowledged that the Apple Watch functions as a stopwatch and music player, but pointed out that the fitness app's statistics and graphs were too inaccurate. “watchOS 7 performed better and the iPhone 4S tracked more accurately, so I think the problem is in the software. 'Being able to run with just an Apple Watch and wireless earbuds feels like magic, especially when tracking works. No need to upload your running data to the cloud.' , I am very grateful to be able to analyze everything by myself.I hope that Apple will solve all the series of problems.'
