In 2023, shipments of PCs and tablets are expected to fall further than in 2022

IDC , an American market research company, has announced 2022 shipments and expected 2023 shipments for the PC and tablet market worldwide. IDC predicts that shipments of PCs and tablets in 2023 will be lower than in 2022, and the market will shrink further.

According to IDC, the forecast for PC shipments worldwide in 2022 was 462.1 million units, a decrease of 10.8% from the same period last year. A particularly notable year-on-year decline was seen in the Public Sector, which represents purchases by schools and governments.

The following shows the shipments of tablets (dark blue) and PCs (light blue) from 2021 to 2025. IDC expects the market to drop 12.8% to 305.3 million units in 2023. In addition, the global tablet shipments in 2023 will decrease by 6.8% compared to 2022 to 156.8 million units.

IDC expects the market to contract further in 2023 as consumer demand slows, education demand is nearly met, and business demand declines due to the macroeconomic downturn.

However, IDC expects PC and tablet shipments to return to growth in 2024, with 2026 shipments surpassing 2022 shipments. As one of the reasons for this revival, IDC cites the end of support for Windows 10 and overlapping hardware update cycles.

'Long-term demand will be driven by a gradual economic recovery and the approaching end of support for Windows 10,' said Jitesh Ubrani, research manager at IDC.

'If the economy recovers in time for the next major refresh cycle, it could drive some unexpected growth,' said Lin Huang, research vice president of Devices & Displays. 'Volumes will never reach their peak during the pandemic, but the consumer market will nevertheless move toward more premium markets.'
