Information leaked from Google's next AR headset 'Project Iris'

As Meta and Microsoft are working on virtual reality (VR) and AR (augmented reality) to build 'Metaverse' one after another, Google is following that trend and developing new AR headsets. Reported by the news site The Verge.

Two people involved in the development of the new headset told The Verge on condition of anonymity that Google is working on the project under the name 'Project Iris' and ski goggles with an outward-facing camera. It is said that it is developing a headset similar to the one for shipment in 2024. This headset uses CG and is expected to provide a more immersive mixed reality (MR) experience than existing AR headsets.

Project Iris is in the early stages without a clear market development strategy. It is said that it will work on Android OS, but The Verge has found job information about Google's AR device and thinks that 'a unique OS will be developed'.

Speaking of AR headsets made by Google, 'Google Glass ' announced in 2013, but Google Glass is evaluated as 'not a big success'. Meanwhile, Google continues to invest in wearable devices, including the acquisition of Canadian wearable device developer North, which develops smart glasses in 2020.

'AR is under consideration and will be a major investment area for us,' Google CEO Sundar Pichai said in an October 2021 earnings call. 'It's unclear if we'll be as aggressive as Meta, which is investing heavily in AR and VR, but we have the money and technology to make it possible,' said The Verge.
