Oculus Go is a stand-alone VR headset that works independently without connecting to a PC, and was released in May 2018. The price of Oculus Go starts from 23,800 yen, which is quite cheap for a VR device, but its degree of freedom was limited to 3DoF, which cannot detect movement in front, back, left and right.

After that, the stand-alone VR headset ' Oculus Quest ' boasting 6DoF freedom was announced in 2019, and Oculus Go was discontinued in June 2020.

And on September 25, 2021, Carmack said, 'What I've been doing for years is coming soon. An unlocked OS build for Oculus Go will be released. Sideloading this. So, full route access will be possible. '

We are going to make available an unlocked OS build for the Oculus Go headset that can be side loaded to get full root access.
And, as Mr. Carmack foretold, the unlocked OS build of Oculus Go was released on October 22, 2021.

The OS of Oculus Go is Android-based, and the OS build released this time will allow full root access. With this, it will be possible to delete system apps, replace the home interface, and build apps for Oculus Go with advanced functions that are not normally permitted via wireless.
Sideloading this build also unlocks the Oculus Go bootloader. By unlocking the boot loader, Facebook's signature will not be confirmed when building the OS, so it will be possible to install a third-party OS.
In addition, Mr. Carmac said about this unlocked OS build, 'Even if a new Oculus Go is accidentally discovered 20 years later and the Facebook update server is stopped at that time, it is possible to update the software version for Oculus Go. It means that it will be. ' Normally, due to security issues, OS builds that can be officially fully rooted are rarely distributed, but Carmack said, 'The unlocked OS builds released are not from Oculus Quest, and they also have a camera. It's not from Oculus Go. There are many concerns about how bad things will happen if users get full control over their old devices, but I clearly support their ability to blossom. ' ..
This is just Oculus Go, with no cameras, not Quest. I still heard a lot of arguments about what bad things could happen if users had full control of their obsolete devices, but I clearly favor user empowerment.

In addition, although the distribution site has a procedure for sideloading to Oculus Go, please note that sideloading will erase all installed apps and data.
