[Obvious] Animator Yasuo Otsuka dies, playing an active part in 'Lupin III' and 'Future Boy Conan'

Yasuo Otsuka, who has been active as an animator for many years and is also known as a jeep enthusiast, participated in Japan's first feature-length anime movie 'The Tale of the White Serpent' as the first student of Toei Animation on Monday, March 15, 2021. I found out that he died. I was 89 years old.

This was revealed at the award ceremony by producer Toshio Suzuki, who became an award winner in the Anime Achievement category of the Tokyo Anime Award Festival 2021.

Mr. Otsuka was born on July 11, 1931 in Shimane Prefecture. He seems to have had an artistic spirit since he was a child, and after moving to Yamaguchi City when he was in the second grade of elementary school, he often sketched steam locomotives. After the end of the war, interest shifted from steam locomotives to US military jeeps and trucks.

In 1951, Mr. Otsuka moved to Tokyo with the aim of becoming a manga artist, passed the recruitment test of the Ministry of Health and Welfare, and became a 'drug G-men' at the drug control officer's office.

However, in 1956, he applied for the test when he learned that Toei would produce the anime movie 'The Tale of the White Serpent'. I safely participated in 'Shirojaden' as the first student of Toei Animation. After that, Isao Takahata, Hayao Miyazaki and others joined Toei Animation. It is also known that Mr. Otsuka was in charge of teaching Mr. Miyazaki. The story of this period is published in Mr. Otsuka's book 'Drawing Sweaty'.

In addition, Mr. Otsuka is the animation director in 'Future Boy Conan', but the face of the heroine Lana who was in charge of the first episode is not the 'beautiful girl' requested by Hayao Miyazaki, and since then Director Miyazaki was in charge of Lana himself.

While working as an animator, Mr. Otsuka had a serialization on truck models in the model magazine 'Hobby Japan', which was first published in 1970. After this series, I am in charge of several series on military vehicles and jeeps.

The Fiat 500, which is very active in the movie 'Lupin III Cagliostro's Castle', is also famous for the episode that it was a car that Mr. Otsuka loved. At the Wonder Festival 2020 [Winter] held in February 2020, the Fiat 500 was exhibited at the venue, and there was one act in which Mr. Otsuka, who visited the venue, left his signature.
