This was revealed by the wording of an email sent to other Apple executives in March 2011 by Vice President Eddie Kew who is in charge of Internet software and services. In the email, Kew writes that the first-year fee for recurring subscriptions should be 40%.



Due to some developers blaming the fee as 'anti-competitive', we reduced the subscription fee from the second year onwards to 15% at the time of the major update in 2016 . However, even then, the app developers complained that the fees were high enough.

At a hearing, Apple CEO Tim Cook explained that 84% of the apps available in the App Store do not require Apple to pay a fee. This is as shown in the 'App Store' item on the Apple official website.
