Seagate announced that it began to ship HDDs of capacity 8 TB to the customer for the first time in the world. This 8 TB HDD is 3.5 inches in size and compatible with S-ATA 3.0 (6 Gbps) but details on model number and other specifications are not disclosed.

"Seagate's 8 TB HDD will be able to respond to the growing demand for data capacity growth at data centers," said John Rydonning, senior vice president of Seagate's HDD division. In addition, the 8 TB HDD which was shipped to specific customers this time is expected to be widely sold for consumers in the fourth quarter of 2014 (October to December).

The maximum capacity increase per drive can reduce not only the capacity unit cost of HDD but also the power consumption, so we can expect the running cost to decline at the data center and so on.

Although it is the maximum capacity of the HDD that stepped up from 6 TB to 8 TB successfully, Seagate is now in the fiscal yearPolicy to release 10 TB HDDis.
