Interview with director Mamoru Hosoda of the movie 'Summer Wars', which makes full use of the highest level of CG and has an unthinkable cast

The movie '

Summer Wars ' created by the staff of 'The Girl Who Leapt Through Time ' will be released on Saturday, August 1st. This time, I was able to interview director Mamoru Hosoda of this 'Summer Wars', so I asked him about various stories about his work.

It is a movie that people of all ages, from children to the elderly, want to see, and with the cast that there is only this person in this role, CG seems to be a work that shows the highest level of modern work by Digital Frontier. ..

The stage is Yomiuri TV.

So, the interview with Director Hosoda has started.

GIGAZINE (G):
It seems that this '

Summer Wars ' was made because 'I want to make an action thing next time ' immediately after 'The Girl Who Leapt Through Time ' is over. Is there any customer base that you are thinking of as a viewing target?

Director Hosoda (hereinafter referred to as director):
Generally, I wanted people who felt like the main character to see it, and I wanted the previous work, 'The Girl Who Leapt Through Time,' to be seen by a high school girl like Makoto, the main character. I actually interviewed high school students, and while looking at the high school students in the city and wondering what they were thinking, I made it for these high school students.

G:
So that's it. So, is the main target of 'Summer Wars' being high school boys like Kenji, the main character?

directed by:
In the case of 'Summer Wars,' the main character of the story is Kenji, who plays Ryunosuke Kamiki, but all the Jinnouchi families in this poster are like the main characters. So, for example, I want children aged 5 to 6 to grandmas aged 90 to see it. It may be dangerous for a 90-year-old grandmother to come to the movie theater because there are stairs in the hall, but I would like you to see it. The target will be various generations.

G:
Did you have any difficulties in making 'Summer Wars'?

directed by:
'The Girl Who Leapt Through Time' was a movie in which the characters were narrowed down, but this time there was a scene where a large family of 28 people came out in total, and each one was active, and at the end everyone It's hard to see everyone in every cut because they gather together.

G:
Certainly, there is Kenji as the main character, but the people of the Jinnouchi family are all moving lively, and it can be said that they are all the main characters.

directed by:
That's right. It was difficult to move everyone, but when you move everyone, it seems that you can feel the atmosphere of boiling at once, and I think that the momentum can be expressed on the screen as much as the animators struggled.

G:
The work was hard, but did you feel that it was fun?

directed by:
It was a lot of work, such as whether the site would really end on a schedule. However, there are times when I'm talking about a family that isn't drawn very carefully in the anime, and even though it's tough, all the staff did it. After-recording, we all got together and played this time, and I think we can create a sense of unity like a family.

The screen is very lively because this large number of people insist on their individuality and move.

G:
Is there any point in 'Summer Wars' that you have taken on a lot of challenges this time?

directed by:
I think the combination of 'digital world' and 'family / relatives' is rare in the history of film. I delicately drew 'digital' and 'family' not because they are good or bad, but because they are both important networks of us. The first challenge was to make an action movie with the family as the main characters. I hadn't had such a work in anime until now, so I was very worried when I was making it, thinking that anime lovers would say, 'Is it a family in anime? In the preview that started recently, I was told that it was 'interesting' and I thought 'something went well', but I'm worried because it hasn't been released yet. There aren't many young girls in the work, and there are only aunts in their 30s and 40s, which is not suitable for anime today, but I hope you will accept this challenge.

G:
It is said that many casts who are not professional voice actors are appointed in 'Time' to bring out freshness, but it is the same intention that people who are not professional voice actors are also appointed as the main cast of this work. Is it?

directed by:
It's more like a character than 'freshness'. For example, Kamiki (Ryunosuke) is Kenji himself. Since this project started three years ago, Kamiki was still around 12 to 13 years old, so I didn't think that Kamiki would play this character. Kamiki is 16 years old, about the same age as Kenji, and even though he has been performing for 14 years, he has a very humble personality, so it seems that no one else will play this role anymore. It's rude to ask Sakae Jinnouchi, a 90-year-old grandmother, to be a young grandmother, but I asked Sumiko Fuji to take on the role of a crisp grandmother with a straight spine. For each role, I feel like I asked someone who matches the character and the humanity of the actor.

Director Hosoda explained while pointing at the main visual.

Ryunosuke Kamiki plays the main character, Kenji Koiso.

G:
So that's it.

directed by:
In this cast, Ichiro Nagai, Tadashi Nakamura, Mieko Nobusawa, Kaori Yamagata and other famous actors have come, but Natsuki has never acted in an anime work. Nanami Sakuraba. You can see that Natsuki played by her is the only young girl who plays the role of a beautiful girl heroine, so I think that there are many beautiful girl heroines in the anime world, so you will soon find someone to play. I was there. And when I tried the audition, this time the quality of the audition was very high and many people who were actually good at it participated, but I couldn't find anyone who came to me.

G:
Does that mean it's a little different from Natsuki?

directed by:
That's right. Before I did it, I thought I would find a beautiful girl soon, but that was my misunderstanding, and while I was auditioning, I realized that Natsuki wasn't just a beautiful girl. I just need something like the simple innocence of a 17-year-old senior who involves a boy, who is in trouble even if he is played cutely, and if it is too 'pretty girl voice', it will not fit.

G:
You can't just be cute ...

directed by:
I auditioned a lot until I found it. When Mr. Sakuraba came to the audition, he probably didn't have much experience, but the moment he heard a few words, he suddenly said, 'Oh, this child is Natsuki.' Even during 'time', the moment I heard Riisa Naka's voice, I immediately realized that 'this is Makoto.' I think it's not about being good or bad, but about the role itself. It's not about having Natsuki play the role, but finding someone who has Natsuki's background.

Natsuki Shinohara (avatar) played by Nanami Sakuraba.

G:
In this work, Mr. Naka plays the role of Yumi Jinnouchi, an aunt with a 38-year-old child. Is this also the reason?

directed by:
Naka-san thought that 'Tokikake' would match Makoto, the main character, but three years later, he has grown into a very good actress. A good actress can be matched even if the role is a little different from herself, and the fact that Naka-san is playing a lively aunt with a child at the age of 38, which is far from herself, is proof that Riisa Naka is good at it. I think. When I play a role like Yumi, I get the image of an old-fashioned voice, but when I say 30 or 40, I'm not that old. That's why I can't make an adult voice in middle age now unless I'm a young person. I think I was able to get a real 30's look by having Naka-san perform while taking on the challenge.

'The name isn't listed here, but it's just a great cast,' said Hosoda.

G:
Certainly, I didn't feel any discomfort when I saw it. Although the story changes, there was a story about 3D at the stage event of Tokyo International Anime Fair 2009, and there was a statement that I was surprised at the 3D texture of the movie 'Apple Seed', but this time I expressed the OZ world with CG. Did that bring it closer to that kind of texture?

directed by:
This is another story. 'Appleseed' has a good concept, and a company called Digital Frontier, which is a CG technology crunchy company, expressed characters with toon rendering, which no one had done before, even if it was thought that it was a possible method. I think it's a victory for the concept of showing off proudly. However, this time CG is different from that, assuming that it is expressed by toon rendering, I was asked to do the highest level work in how to express the high level of CG. OZ is a very simple world that is not cluttered, but just because it is simple does not mean that it is easy to make, and even in white colors, it takes a lot of time and effort to make subtle gradations. It's a world with about 1 billion avatars.

G:
I heard at the anime fair that each one billion avatars have different faces.

directed by:
At the time of the anime fair, it was still in the rush film stage, but when it's completed, it's really amazing. If you look at this on the big screen of the movie theater, it will come close to you, so it will be erratic. It is said in other works that CG is used in the animation and it is not amazing, but 'Summer Wars' is really amazing. The work of Digital Frontier in 'Summer Wars' is amazing, and it feels like 'Eat Shit!'. Until now, I've talked about how CG is floating in anime and how to match it, but I think 'Look at this!' (Laughs).

The movement of 1 billion avatars is impressive.

G:
It seems that the OZ that appears in the work is an image of SNS like mixi and MySpace, but it is the SNS and the Internet in the real world that the AI called love machine appears in the work and messes up the OZ. Is there something like a warning bell to?

directed by:
There's no warning ... I've always been a Mac user, and I don't have to worry about security as much as Windows, so there's no such thing.

G:
ah I see.

directed by:
If anything, I think that the Internet world is fun, including such troubles. If I had been using Windows from the beginning, it might have been a movie saying 'I'm scared of the internet', but with a Mac, even if such troubles occur, I feel sick.

G:
I see, even though OZ is messed up even during the work, the atmosphere is bright somewhere, probably because of that.

directed by:
There was an incident where a file was leaked on Windows, but I thought there was such a thing. I can hardly watch videos on Mac anymore (laughs).

G:
Security may be safe, but it's a little inconvenient. Next time I'm working on it, Love Machine has taken over Kenji's avatar at first, but eventually he got his own avatar. This unique avatar looks like a myth, and even carries a back light. Why did you design it like this instead of a mechanic design?

directed by:
When I was thinking about how to design a love machine, I thought that it would be stored somewhere because it is an AI that steals accounts. Actually, the model is Dainichi Nyorai, but I thought it was cool to have Dainichi Nyorai carrying a back light and flames on his back and wearing a lot of equipment, so I talked with Mr. Okazaki (Noshi) who designed the character of OZ. It seems that Mr. Okazaki also liked Dainichi Nyorai among the Buddhist statues. So it would be fresh and interesting if the enemy that threatened the digital world was a Buddhist visual. When it becomes huge, the afterglow becomes big like a Ferris wheel, and it is a world like a Buddhist painting because it is covered with clouds. There is a Buddhist atmosphere in the second half.

G:
What did you like about what you were happy to hear from your fans?

directed by:
It would be great if you could enjoy it and say, 'It was really fun' or 'I really enjoyed it.' There are many difficult stories in the current movie, but I am aiming for a refreshing story and something that will be fun after watching it, so I hope you will accept that kind of fun.

'The movie must be fun,' said Hosoda.

G:
I think this is a question that has already been answered in many interviews, but is there anything you want to say?

directed by:
You can read this interview online. I think it's rare to see a movie set on the web like 'Summer Wars' even if you look at the Hollywood movie lineup this summer. It's an adventure drama in a world close to those who are watching the web, so of course ordinary people can enjoy it, but I think that people with a high affinity for the web have more fun elements, so please come and see it. I think.

G:
Lastly, there was a story that 'Tokikake' was created because I wanted to express the vitality of Japanese girls, and in this 'Summer Wars' I wanted to draw the vitality of a large family, but the next work Do you have any ideas about?

directed by:
Next is ... I heard that you could make 'Summer Wars' because everyone saw 'Time', so if 'Summer Wars' hits, you will have a chance to make the next work. It's such a series, so I hope I can enjoy this work and create something new and entertaining. If I get a chance next time, I would like to make a fun work because I will make it.

G:
So that's it. I hope that 'Summer Wars' will be a big hit and lead to the next. Thank you for today.
