This time, I was able to interview Mr. Yasuhiro Yoshiura at the director at GIGAZINE. Mr. Yoshiura asked why he started digging the roots, why he came to make animation, how his works had been produced, and what kind of work he will create in the future.

◆ How did you start making animation

Have you made animation for the first time at the time of university, but until that time did you have an interest in animation production?

Yoshi
Well ... I was playing theater all the time when I was in high school, but when I decided on course I thought, "Let's stop actors." Just then, in the late 90's it was a time when CG began to be used as a game, so I went to college thinking that I would like to study CG relations.

G:
Were you interested in CG rather than animation?

Yoshi
I was not interested in CG where the so-called character moves. "MYSTI love the game "I love you", the view of the world has been laid out by CG, and the uninhabited island drawn was very beautiful. I was overwhelmed by the visuals, so I thought that CG would be nice if I could create such a world.

G:
"MYST" has seen a friend playing the Sega Saturn version.

Yoshi
At first it is a game released for Macintosh, I think that it was the PC game which adopted the CD-ROM for the first time. It is long to start talking about this game (laugh) So, as I entered from that place, CG is a world view or background rather than character animation for me. I feel charm there.

G:
The first thing I made animation was that I made it when I was playing, saying "I made something to shed on the screen behind the scenes".

At first I went to a school that was in the neighborhood, Kyushu University of Art and Technology, dealing with CG since long ago. Although there is no work like "Big Bang" or "epoch making" which is "this work is fun!", At the beginning of entrance, it probably saw PV animation of STUDIO 4 ° C production etc, this fused cell and CG with handwriting As it was a work that seems to be like it, I thought that it would be appropriate for animation to do. So, at first I was painting with a little hobby. I quit the theater department that had been included because I was not going to play the theater, but if you are interested in the movie it is said to try making a picture of a play. Many of live-action images were based on live-actions, for example, the actors' faces, names, and titles come out one after the other, but I made it with animation. Even though, it was like a primitive RotoScope that traces human movement and draws, but this was the first time.

G:
Although it is said that there is no Big Bang work like this especially in animation, is there not much work like 'Watching this animation'?

Yoshi
I saw 'Eva' at high school. Until then I did not watch animation, but I thought "Anime is such funny". Since I was not watching anime after all because I was in junior high school ... ....

G:
I see.

Yoshi
When I was in high school I was watching "GHOST IN THE SHELL", play acts and various things.

G:
It is a feeling that I have seen various things other than animation.

Yoshi
It was around high school that I began watching movies or video works as if they were devouring. In those days it was a omniscience.

◆ Challenge to the digital stadium, and to "Pale Cocoon"

It is the next work of a play picture. The first work was somewhat quirky to put in the play, so I came to the CG spear as I thought that I would make something. However, it is almost impossible for me to make the first work as a matter of talking about a grand story and it is hard to complete. So I thought about making it with restriction, because it was that there was a screening campaign circle around 2 weeks later, I made it so that it will be in time for the screening.

I thought that it would be a PV system when it was time to make it separate. I do not need a story and the length of the sound is fixed so the scale will be the same. However, I do not have any favorite singer.

I really do not listen to music, of course I listen, but I do not actively buy CDs. So, when listening to a friend listening to music often in the surroundings "I heard something with short length music", I borrowed a slip knot album because there are many short songs on hardcore. I picked the shortest song out of them, and it was "I NANAI" made according to that song.

While 5 or 6 people gathered and talked, unfortunately the story was not adopted, but as another frame, we will make a program that broadcasts a short movie of 10 minutes called "Demonstrator 10 min Theater", so that animation for that I was invited to not make. It is said that "Kotoba of water" is said to be said to be able to make it original, rather than setting a theme.


G:
Although reaction was bad with a transistor, was there feeling that it was unable to be defeated that I sent it again?

Yoshi
It is a nuisance. When screening in the university, I will be challenged like my seniors, but after having been broadcast in the Dempseya, the reaction was a bit bad, so "Well then I will make more amazing!" "Water Kotoba" was in the stock as I wanted to make it before the story came from the transistor.

I agree. Works that I made when I was a university were many artworks such as 'Nari Nika' and 'Kikumana', and I thought that if I graduate as it is, it will be locked up as an artistic video writer and it will be difficult for later activities I thought about making a work that will spin the dialogue this time. In part because I liked theater, I was able to do "Water Kotoba".

G:
I saw "Water Kotoba", but I felt the same thing as "Eve's time", with the main stage in the coffee shop, the words sweeping with popularity.

Yoshi
When I made "Water Kotoba", I thought that this would be efficient if I made it as series animation. With the same scene you do not have to make a background, costly performance with a feeling like a drama shooting with one set.

Did your consciousness change from university base to professionalism?

How is it ... I suppose that even if it was an extension of the university's independent production, I did the same way of making it. Since it is a policy to incorporate reflections of previous works, the experimental work was about experimental work "Water Kotoba" and I tried to do a bit more straightforward story thing "Pale · It is Cocoon. Just before Shinkai Makoto's "Hoshino goe" was there, there are parts that have been influenced, whether you looked at it considerably or made a good reference. As a writer, I thought it would be bad if I had to do commercial basis more than I thought. Until "water Kotoba" was a bit of art based, "Pale Cocoon" was conscious of commercial animation. Also, 'Hoshino hen' is also about 20 minutes in length, but as if the full story is a magnificent story like a trailer. "Oh, I thought how to make this kind of thing" I thought.

People who understand "Pale Cocoon" can understand immediately, but those who do not understand do not understand well. So I thought that I wanted to make people feel more empathy from the atmosphere and that "Pale Cocoon" had narrative characteristics so I did not have any character character, so I thought of being a character this time It was. What type of audience were you supposed to make "the time of Eve"?

Yoshi
It is a story that anyone can universally see, I like dramas, like movies, not just inside animation lovers, if anyone likes stories, I would like anyone in the broader to see it Right. Therefore, I took care that it was flat so that not much slime was made in the work. Character design, for example, is not particularly standing edge, and CG is not emphasized. Even if it is a story, the robot is handled and the three principles of robot comes out, but as we tighten the three principles, it will be a very deep story, so when we write the script, the story told is universal feeling part I took care to include it. However, on the other hand I love science fiction, so I did not want to put an excessive fantasy on the robot. For example, I do not like that, like knowing love with a miracle of love, or wanting a robot to be a human.

G:
Certainly, the robots of 'Eve's time' are divisible, or they may show humans, but they never wanted to be human.

Yoshi
Well, it probably went on to the next step (laugh). There are also things that I have not had much time to watch. There are also things that I do not see my work as I make it up.

G:
By the way, what kind of work do you do "director" specifically? If it's "Eve's time", are there planning, directing, screenwriting and posts and doing all about the picture? It is a feeling.

Yoshi
It is somewhat different from general animation director, but basically it is other than drawing. For example, the CG of the shop was organized by himself, and everything else was doing it by themselves, but since the efficiency is indeed ineffective, the room of Masaki who came out with the next school and living room, 6 talks is I covered at the event and made a rough model only, I am outsourcing modeling from there and making detailed items. The actual camera work and layout of each cut is decided by yourself. I am asking animators and painting directors to print the layout printed from there as a drawing manager. Of course, since I check as a director, I will ask you to ask this kind of wind as you will instruct the animator in drawing pictures by the live action, so I will act as a performance director. The background also adds hand-drawn retouching to what I output in 3D, but at the beginning I was doing it myself, but my hands have stopped running, now I am taking charge of the retouching coach.

G:
At first it was all done on your own.

It is an unreasonable story when thinking now. So, basically I do it by shooting and editing when drawing is coming up. Oh, shooting will also be assisted by other staff.

What do you think is fun to create animation?

Yoshi
Well ... ............ Animation production has a lot of "penance" parts for me (laugh), but if it's "Eve's time", acting, that is, it's the others to draw. Of course I paint to paint (painting) like this to the storyboard, but there is sometimes more good acting returning, and I am happy at that time.

G:
Things beyond imagination are coming up.

Or, when the part that I did not imagine is supplemented, I think "Oh, was that so?" The director seems to be caught in the image, for example, when lifting the box, the animator's person seems to be interested in "This box is heavy?" In my image, it was a vaguely "lifting" movement, it is nice to hear that an additional acting "goodness" comes in as if it is colorfulness or emotion when it comes to the hands of animators. Sometimes, I added more images of my own addition there.

G:
It is a feeling that the image swells in the interaction. Then, is there anything you do not like in animation production?

Yoshi
This is not enough for the work site, but especially in this case there are only 3 or 4 people in the studio in the studio, and most of the work is done in places where my eyes do not reach. For example, if you are a Studio Ghibli, you have Director Hayao Miyazaki, and the staff are lining up desk side by side. The background art staff are also on the same premises even though they are a bit far away. But, this time there is work in the basically invisible place, the result reaches my place, I check it and return it again, so I will work together with a single team to make the work good There is a slightly different part from doing under the belief of doing. As it is a system of animation industry, since paper only comes with various people, if it is possible to gather it in one place if possible if possible. I could not do this time, but this is something I can improve if I want to do it in the future.

Does that mean that in the future will you become a studio that will make it while checking staffs queued side by side?

Yoshi
I would like to make it together in the same place if possible.

G:
After all, is there something a bit unity is not born unless you do it in the same place?

Yoshi
Although it is irresponsible to say so much as it is in the imagination, it is irresponsible to say so much, but the free animators are holding a lot of work, taking time and taking the original picture of "the time of Eve" I think. Especially "Eve's time" makes quite irregular making, after talking about one and making the next several months or so .... It would be nice if we could arrange a system to restrain and make it together with everyone, but there are financial problems as well, it is hard to put a burden on the drawing director in a way that brings together the scenes. That is a big reflection point of this work.

How much time, labor and cost did it take for "Studio Rokka" in making "Eve Time"?

Yoshi
As for the effort, since there was work to set up the character setting, the background design, and the 3D of the background as the stage as the preparation at the beginning, at the beginning, it was about 1 year or so with such preparatory work and the story + first episode · two talk production It took. Instead, I made the remaining 3 stories to 6 stories in about the same year. I have heard that it seems that it takes about 3 months on average to include screenplays and contest periods to produce one episode of TV animation. Furthermore, in ordinary television cartoons, we organized around 4 to 5 teams, and when we made the first episode another team made the second episode, and the team who made the one episode made more story talk numbers It seems to be a feeling. However, we were basically the same staff 1 team, so it was hard work. For example, draw a story of two stories between making the first episode, rework the story of the three episodes on the way while making two episodes, draw a container ... .... Because I was making a way to draw a story of 4 talks while making it further. Regarding the drawing, the time is scattered, but the part of the contest / direction where I work is hard.

G:
There was a story saying that there are comments and reviews on the web distribution, but are there any merits and demerits that are felt in the presence of the net?

Yoshi
I just made it, so I have never thought about the publication medium so deeply. I do not know whether I will do it on the web in the future. However, the way to announce on the web may be changed in a couple of years, like water, or as it has changed significantly before and after YouTube. The thing you need to be careful about on the net is that this sense of the present has changed after a few months. It is a good thing to have an environment where people from the world can instantly see it, and people in the world will see it soon, but it is difficult to sell them as a product after that.

G:
Up until now I managed to send a fan letter or interact with an animated magazine, but I could write my thoughts on my blog and write a review on that website Have you changed the reaction?

Yoshi
The response is getting better. This is my bodily sensation, but the people who saw it compared to the previous DVD only work are also orders of magnitude. However, I need literacy to jump in on the net from myself. There is a person who is angry with going out to look at 2 threads about myself, but I think that I need to learn a sense of distance to myself and such information. It is one opinion to the last. It used to be done in the past, but I have not done it recently (laugh)

Are you trying not to see 2 chan things as well?

Is there a point that I want you to see the performance of my work?

Yoshi
If you say a point, you seem to be bothering others, but of course not. However, always thinking "Let me make a script properly" is not it? When it is "Pale Cocoon", there is a place to idle, but I am going to have made it well by myself. I like how to make a script for PIXAR, I think that I try to keep things like that. The framework of "setting" of the stage and the story can be worn out objects covered with dirt, except for the plot. Even if I made a mistake, I think that plotting is too simple and not plain.

Previously, it was said that "The setting is classical science fiction, but I am making the plot a fresh one".

I like "Toy Story 2" very much. I think that "Toys are living in places where children can not see" is simple and worn out, but I think that it is a matter of that person's imagination to be simple. "Toy Story 2" has an amazing drama there, right? The main character 's Woody is a toy with a pretty premium, and it will be stolen by an adult who knows its value. Do you have any work that you are conceiving that you are making something now?

Yoshi
There are various ideas. Since Eve has a long production span, the idea of ​​the next work comes to mind while making a work. To tell one thing, I think whether it will be the end of a project like to start with a conversational play. Of course, it does not mean that you truncate the taste like that direction or something like that, it means that it is an anime with other charms. Actually, in the beginning, in parallel with "the time of Eve" some animation ... Eva, but I was helping out, and there was a return to origin that such animation is interesting after all. Is there a specific novel or something you would like to remake in a former movie?

Yoshi

As a real feeling, whatever selling way, even if it is flushed on the net, I think that it will sell interesting work. As a producer, I just create interesting things.

I think images are dangerous as sources. Even if the novel is digitized, I still want to read it in a book, I do not want to read much on the screen of a personal computer.
