Nitter's service has repeatedly been interrupted and restored due to changes in X's specifications, and on August 18, 2023, a workaround was implemented that allowed users to retrieve posts by obtaining a 'guest account' using a proxy. However, it later became impossible to create new guest accounts, and all users were unable to use Nitter.

Although it had been revived again in February 2025, on August 24, 2026, a cease and desist order was finally sent from X requesting the permanent removal of each instance of Nitter and the project repositories, prompting the developers to voluntarily declare a halt to development.

According to developer zedeus, nitter.net is currently offline and seeking legal advice regarding the claims.

Zedeus said, 'I don't intend to comment further on the details at this time. I would like to thank everyone who has used, hosted, packaged, donated to, and contributed to Nitter over the past seven years.'

Nitter was developed as an open-source project, but as of August 25, 2026, its GitHub repository has been moved to an archived state.
